Hello, I tried to install Ubuntu (the latest version = 04/2016) on my desktop PC from a live USB, but it crashed. (see screenshots)

It seems to be a partitioning problem (?)
The PC is 3 years old, with a 500 GB HDD (which had a crashed Windows 7 on it)
If anyone can help me. Thank you in advance. (I am available all day to provide more details).
ps another screenshot:

Is there anyone who can tell me how to try to reinstall Ubuntu please? I'm stuck with my desktop PC.
This is Ubuntu 16.04 (amd64 iso).

      Hello,
I can't read the messages on your screenshots; the image definition is too low.
Upload them to cjoint.com and post the link here.

thank you for your response. for the snapshots, I don't think it will be better elsewhere because I posted them as they were taken with ubuntu. I put the texts below:
        image n°1 :
ubi-partman failed with exit code 141. Further information may be found in /var/log/syslog. Do you want to try running this step again before continuing? If you do not, your installation may fail entirely or may be broken.
        [Retry] [Ignore] [Close]

        image n°2 :
Partition(s) 1,2 on /dev/sda have been written, but we have been unable to inform the kernel of the change, probably because it/they are in use. As a result, the old partition(s)
will remain in use. You should reboot now before making further changes.
        [Cancel] [Ignore]

I must have messed up at the beginning with the partitioning, and unfortunately, I cut off the formatting of the dd at some point (last night at 1:30 AM) because I was fed up; it had been running since 6:30 PM.

It's probably your interrupted formatting that caused the mess.
I think you want to get rid of Windows if it's not working anymore.
The simplest way: you restart your live CD or live USB, there is a utility called gparted that will allow you to delete the disk partitions and create new ones according to your needs. You can then restart the installation.

However, tell me what type of formatting you tried to do because generally, formatting a partition only takes a few seconds.

Actually, I wanted to delete the NTFS partition (Windows 7) and when starting the Ubuntu installation, I followed the instructions: delete (the NTFS partition) then new partition table; choose a primary partition (ext4); then choose a logical partition and by pressing next, it started formatting.
The procedure I followed is the one found on the site below:
      https://openclassrooms.com/fr/courses/43538-reprenez-le-controle-a-laide-de-linux/37192-partitionner-son-disque
At the beginning of the installation, the images on the site were exactly what I saw on my screen, except that when I reached the time zone I had error messages. I can't remember what I did next, but it started formatting, and I abandoned it after many hours of waiting.
I also want to add that it messed up my distribution on the USB stick... I just reformatted it because it was inaccessible.

Hmm... I wonder if your hard drive has a problem.
Do as I told you: launch gparted and prepare your partitions before starting the installation.
For the installation, choose the option "Something Else" when selecting the installation type, it will allow you to control everything it does.

Ok, I will put the distribution (ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64) back on the USB stick and I'll try with GParted. I will post the results tomorrow, tonight I’m watching football ;-)
Thanks again for your interest in this issue.

Hi, in case your screenshots come from Kubuntu and not from the ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64 ISO... It might be normal but we're not safe from an error ^^

      Enjoy the match otherwise

Thank you ;-) the screenshots come from Ubuntu (the regular version I had downloaded before and which crashed) and by tomorrow I will try again with Kubuntu 16.04 LTS (64 bits) (from the Ubuntu site = ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64), it can get confusing with these names..

    @ ant.r72 ok.
Otherwise, the problem is still not resolved; this morning I tried to restart the installation with my USB stick, but it's impossible; the cursor is blinking and nothing happens. Yet it works on my laptop. I then reinstalled Windows on the desktop PC and here’s what the disk manager shows me (I uploaded the screenshot to cjoint.com because I can't post it on CCCM today):

Apparently the previous attempt to install Linux must have created a FAT32 partition.
I would like to know what I should do with this partition; should I reformat it with Windows? Because in this situation, I see that I only have 465 GB of NTFS disk space left and 3.84 GB in FAT32. The disk is 500 GB, so I'm wondering where the rest has gone. And how can I restart the Linux installation?

Hello everyone. Just a quick word to say that I've finally managed to install Ubuntu by burning the 16.04 LTS version onto a DVD-RW (rewritable DVD), since the installation wouldn't start from my USB key anymore.
Furthermore, I've chosen to keep Windows 7 for a little while longer, in dual boot, to get familiar with Linux.
For those interested, in case of installation problems or anything else, if you can't find an adequate answer here, go to the Ubuntu site; it’s very well documented and there’s also a forum.
