Hi everyone,
While watching the videos broadcast on TV (demonstrations, floods, weather reports, concerts, etc.) featuring testimonies, I was wondering: Why are amateur videos filmed with smartphones blurred on the left and right sides? Knowing that the same image appears on both the right and left.

Just a simple question because visually it's not great and there's nothing to hide!!???

Thanks to all of you

Hello,
This is the current nonsense, a mobile phone is held vertically so people film vertically (ridiculous!).
On a 16/9 horizontal screen, the vertical 16/9 image from the phone will therefore be surrounded by a lot of black, increasing the narrowness effect of this image lost in the middle of the black, so we fill in with a blurred image to "fill" the screen and reduce the effects of narrowness and verticality.
Conversely: a camera is preferably held horizontally, the nonsense is repeated, people only take horizontal photos, even portraits...

Hello,
HA!! here’s a response
indeed. What you say is true. Everyone holds it vertically and then it’s a mess to rotate it 90° (see the number of questions on this subject).
Thank you, I thought people were less stupid and that it was intentional on the part of the channels.

A big thank you to you
Have a great day

My neighbor wanted to view his vertical photos in "full screen" and couldn't understand why there was black on each side, so I rotated it 90° and suggested he either look at his vertical photos by tilting his head or turning his TV vertically...;-), then he understood...

That's exactly what my wife did when she tried to film me with my phone. I was pruning a tree 30 meters up. So with VLC's rotation and resizing, it didn't show anything anymore (given the height of the tree), she ultimately had to tilt her head, and then it ended up in the trash (not my wife, the video).

Indeed, the explanation regarding the framing and the difference in image format seems the most accurate to me. Instead of adding large, unattractive black bars, TV channels prefer to implement a more visually pleasing blurring.

Hello,

Indeed, that's an excellent question. Perhaps it is to emphasize certain details of the video that will appear at the center of the image. Otherwise, I don't see any other rational explanation.
