Hello,

I have an HP Compaq dc5800 PC with a BIOS HP 786F2 v01.53 and I have update issues.
When I go to the HP website, the latest version is 1.60.
I'm following their tutorial to flash via F10
But when I try to save my BIOS, I get an error saying "drive erroneous or missing" or something like that, even though my USB stick works fine.
Too bad, I attempt without making a backup; I copied the .bin file onto a CD, and I get the same error message.
I don't know what to do to fix this error.
I make another attempt by flashing via Windows, and this time I get an error message C\user ....\ ROM.cab missing
Can you help me?
Thank you.

Hello,

apparently this issue is not uncommon with HP Compaq:

I advise against updating the BIOS if you are getting these error messages:
it's very risky if the file is corrupted, your PC will be unusable

Why do you want to update the BIOS?
It won't make your PC more performant
we update the BIOS so that the PC can accept new CPUs, for example, which in your case won't change anything, given the age of the machine...

I had a problem when switching from Win7 to Win10.
Not finding any solution that could fix the errors, I had to reformat the hard drive.
So I searched for all updates, especially the BIOS update.
While reading the BIOS version history for the 786f2, I indeed saw that the improvements wouldn’t bring me much. They spanned from 2008 to 2009, except for the last two in 2011 and 2015. I particularly noticed that in the 2015 update, Win 7 was taken into account and that HP recommended installing this version, hence the update.

While it is relatively easy to guide the update of a BIOS from a major motherboard brand (like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte), it is much riskier to try to give you advice in the case of a branded PC, where everything is always specific.

Have you contacted HP Compaq support?
They may have a solution.
Of course, the PC should no longer be under warranty, but you can still try.
