Hello, I just worked for 3 hours on a comms document and while finalizing, thinking I was closing a source document that I didn’t want to save changes to, my working document closed, and I can't get it back. I imagine it's gone since I didn't save anything, but just in case, is there any trick to recover my work? Thanks.

Hi,
unfortunately, there's nothing to be done to recover the lost work.
I agree with Mr.: when starting serious work on software, one must ensure the functionality and settings of automatic backups.
And as you progress, Ctrl-S regularly should become a reflex. Every significant advancement or every 5 or 10 minutes, in my case.
One is never safe from a crash or a power outage. Losing several tens of minutes of work happens once, maybe twice, or even three times for the stubborn ones, and then you take your precautions...
Paint.net is a bit for children, isn’t it? ;) I mean.. Creating a work document with that is pushing it...
There is the Calligra suite, open-source and free, which could perfectly suit this kind of work.

Thank you for your very helpful advice for a novice like me. I just want to say that it would have been received much better if it had been delivered with kindness rather than a sense of arrogance... When you lose a job, as you have experienced yourself, you are already, it seems to me, quite angry at yourself, so it's not necessarily useful for the "helpers" to pile on more... In any case, this is not the type of support I was expecting, and that wasn't the question... But thank you for your methodology and your link; I might now be able to engage in my "child's play" with a bit more seriousness... or not... since you guessed it, I am not a professional and have never claimed to be one. I didn't think it was a requirement to have the right to ask a question!

Until then, I will quickly escape from this forum and return to my unforgivable beginner's mistakes... Although we did not discuss it, it seems to me that Kodiak could be the same person I saw waste several days making a tutorial on Blender in vain.
I therefore give him the deserved +1 not coming from me but that some enlightened demagogues, who wouldn’t do a tenth for their fellow beings, nevertheless had the gall to take away from him.
As for the life path, that's kind, but forget it, it's far too late for him; he's almost as old as I am ;)

Hello
Let's be a little serious, someone who would work "professionally" since this gentleman does "com docs" would certainly not spend 3 hours without doing a single ctrl S which takes a second, and would even less use software as simplistic and basic as paint.net
Not to mention that there are tons of other free options that are much more complete and offer automatic saving options every ten minutes or even less
So no, nothing to do but a wise man is worth two...
To my knowledge, only Photoshop creates temporary files of PSDs that can sometimes be recovered in case of crashing, but at the cost of a thousand difficulties; for the others, it's definitively dead if nothing has been saved.-
Thank you very much, I thought I would find a principle of help here, but I see that like everywhere, some people have nothing better to do than waste their time posting judgmental and disdainful comments about a completely unknown person... I really don't understand the point... Sometimes wouldn't it be better to remain silent than to make such a ridiculous contribution? Thank you again...

Hi
Listen, who used trendy language in the question that could only belong to a professional graphic designer if not you? Under these circumstances, yes, your question was utterly unbelievable and absurd
In theory, you create a new file and immediately save it as before doing anything, which then allows you to just hit ctrl S regularly
Here, and contrary to what my nickname might suggest, I've primarily wasted my time for several years helping thousands of people with tens of thousands of answers.
And here, for example, if no one other than me goes to this kind of topics, it's because they know perfectly well that it's complex, so they'll have to spend hours doing it just for the Queen of England
