    check that File -> Offline -> work offline is disabled

      As for our subject, to answer your question, I didn't find a small red x in the bottom left, and I don't have anything that could indicate that I need to make sure that "work offline is disabled."       in the Write window, right-click in the File Edit bar ... activate Mail toolbar
      if it's just the button that is grayed out, it stays that way until an address has been entered
