Hello,
I am on a laptop with Windows 8.1. I had Money 2002 which was working perfectly until today, and then all of a sudden Money opens and closes right away!!!
I have already made progress on my own by reading your forum. First, I naturally backed up my accounts, then uninstalled it with Revo, cleaned the registry, restarted, and reinstalled Money several times but nothing works. I tried reinstalling both the 2002 and 2005 versions, but neither of them works, I'm really really stuck!!
If you could help me that would be great, thank you.

    Hello;

    Are you sure you have uninstalled MsMoney correctly? I suggest you follow the instructions below step by step.

    Uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft MsMoney

    1- Make sure the latest backup is up to date and valid: If so, make a copy of this backup onto a removable medium (USB stick - CD/RW or External HDD)

    2- Completely uninstall MsMoney using Revo Uninstaller, which can be downloaded via the link below.
    https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/19405-revo-uninstaller/
    Launch this tool, search for Microsoft MsMoney, and uninstall it.

    3- Open hidden files in Windows / If problems arise >> See the link below.
    http://www.chantal11.com/2009/04/afficher-les-fichiers-caches-systeme-windows-7-vista/
    Then navigate to C:\User(Name of the user)\AppData\local\Microsoft >> Look for Money and delete it.

    4- Open the registry by typing Regedit (by clicking on the Windows icon at the bottom left and typing regedit and opening it (see the top of the window)).
    Open the Hkey_Current_User key, then search for Software >> Microsoft >> Money >> Delete it.
    Open the Hkey_Local_Machine key and do the same operation (if Money is present).

    5- Restart the machine.

    6- Reinstall MsMoney version 2005 using the available update patch (or reinstallation) from the link below.
    https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/bureautique/15561-microsoft-money-2005/
    Then install it by following the procedure in the link.

    7- Restart MsMoney from the backup made in 1- and everything should be back in order.

    For security reasons >> Always make a backup of MsMoney on a removable medium (External hard drive - USB stick or CD/RW).
    You need to configure your backup using the screenshots from the download link for the patch according to the destination of the backup (Example made for a backup on CD/RW).

    If problems arise >> Return to the Forum.
    See you for the result.

    Regards

    I had already done all that, but I did it again step by step this morning. I also removed updates that had been installed the day money stopped working and an antivirus at startup just in case, and all that to no avail; the problem is still the same :(

      Hello Chantgie;

      It's surprising that you're having this issue because uninstalling properly by following the step-by-step method explained above resolves the problem in 99% of cases.
      Are you sure that your backup isn't causing problems??

      Edit; You write: "I had Money 2002 that was working perfectly until today, and then suddenly Money opens and closes right away!!!" >> Have you tried doing a system restore to a date when MsMoney was working???

      Microsoft updates have no effect on the MsMoney software, which suggests that the problem lies elsewhere >> Since when do you think this problem has appeared?
      A+
      Cheers

    Hello again, I was cleaning up my computer and I was in the process of backing up all my important files for a factory reset in order to install Win10 on something clean. Once that was done, I started the reset on my PC, but it wouldn't let me do it because the partition where the backup was located had disappeared!! I didn't understand why. So too bad, I restore everything, and that’s when Money won’t open anymore!!
    I wanted to try a system restore, but there’s only one restore point, and it’s from the same day, so not interesting.
    I don't think the problem comes from my backup because I don't even have the time to use it since Money stays open for barely one second!
    I don't understand anything at all.

      Hello Changie;

      From which source did you install MsMoney?
      Did you check the box allowing access to older restore points in order to try to set a date when MsMoney was working?
      Did you try to launch MsMoney by itself, that is, without your backup as soon as the software was installed, to see if it starts normally, and if so, then your backup is the problem?
      Did you create a system image on an external drive at a time when MsMoney was installed and functional?
      Do you have the possibility in your surroundings to install MsMoney and launch it right after installing it, and then from your own backup, and if that works, the problem is Windows on your machine (then you uninstall MsMoney on the "guinea pig" machine)?

      After answering and trying the proposed solutions, we will continue to explore other avenues, but based on what you wrote above, you've done quite a bit, and maybe too much "cleaning" in the system??

      See you soon for the next steps
      Best regards

    Hello,
    I installed Money from your link.

    As for the restore points, I only have one, not old enough in my opinion, and in any case my PC does not want to restore (I have indeed disabled my antivirus).
    I don't have a system image.

    The issue is not with my backup; it works on my husband's PC.

    I also think the problem comes from Windows!
    Thank you very much for your involvement.

      Hello Chantgie;

      If Msmoney works on your husband's PC, the problem lies with your Windows OS and in this case, a reinstallation of Windows is necessary (unless I'm mistaken) since you have more or less caused some issues with Windows that weren't properly resolved
      This means that a reinstallation of Windows might solve the problem????????????????
      See you later
      Best regards

    Thank you very much, I reached the same conclusion and I'm working on it, but I'm also having problems (my PC is driving me crazy!!!)
    I no longer have a recovery partition!!! Apparently, other people are experiencing this as well following the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1.
    I am currently downloading an ISO of my Windows to try to reinstall it; it's not downloading quickly, it's going to take a while.
    I'll get back to you with updates as soon as possible.
    Thank you.

      Hello Chantgie;

      For now, I can only wish you strength and patience because it's not easy to reinstall Windows 8.1 on your machine.
      See you later
      Best regards

    Hello,
    here it is, the PC has been reset, I’ve reinstalled Windows 8 (I’m upgrading to 8.1) and Money is working again :) ) I want to thank you for guiding me to the resolution of my problem.
    And also a big thank you to the whole forum because I wouldn’t have known how to reset my PC (my recovery partition being deleted) without having read and re-read the posts that discussed it.

    Thanks to everyone, best regards.
