I have finished the merging and printed the first pages.
And when printed, are the variables also on a gray background? If so, it is no longer just the background that allows you to identify the merge fields, but a real background. In this case, select your entire merged document and in the Home tab, choose "No Color" in the "Background Fill" tool.
