Hello,
I just wanted to know if the iMac 21" and 27" have a central unit, more commonly known as a "tower"?

I mention this because I've heard about "all-in-one" PCs.

Thank you!

Hello,

when we say "central unit" in everyday computer language, what exactly do we mean? This expression refers to the case that contains the essential components, namely the motherboard and its processor (also called logic board), the graphics card (video card), and such components (especially the screen that is separate, unlike an all-in-one computer). All this within the same case.
Typically, elements that are not part of the central unit are external peripherals, like the screen, possibly the CD drive, keyboard, mouse, etc... all these elements that are connected by cables or via Bluetooth to the central unit in order to be managed and used.

An iMac is a so-called "all-in-one" computer because this computer includes the logic board, the screen, the CD drive when present, etc... so an iMac is an "all-in-one" computer because it is a computer that is both a central unit including elements that in other computers constitute external peripherals. Essentially, it is the presence of the built-in or separate screen that makes the difference between a so-called "all-in-one" computer and a "tower" central unit.

The advantage of "towers" is that the components are interchangeable; for example, you can change the graphics card in a "tower," but you cannot, or rarely can, do that in an "all-in-one" computer. In a central unit, we have the logic board or motherboard (which is the main board and contains the processor), to which the daughter boards are connected, like the graphics cards, network cards, etc...

A Mac Pro (not to be confused with a Macbook Pro) is a central unit sold without a screen, a unit in which you can add or change daughter boards.
