How to read .SWM files?

Hello,

I have an external hard drive on which I store my photos and documents.
When I last opened my hard drive, I found that all my files were in a format that my computer cannot read: .SWM. I defragmented and cleaned my external hard drive just before, I might have made an error, I am not a specialist...

Could you advise me and help me convert my documents and photos into another "standard format," so that I can open them again?

Thank you
Thierry

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 35.0

    Hello,
Did you stop the defragmentation in the middle of the process?

      Hello,
I'm not a specialist in IT. I don't know if I stopped the defragmentation in the middle of the process, but it's possible. How can I find out?

Maybe we should try to restart the defragmentation.

it doesn't change anything (fragmentation was already at 0%)
Fifteen days ago, before defragmenting, I cleaned this external hard drive.
I may have thrown away essential files for its proper functioning? (the recycle bin has since been emptied). During a cleaning operation, do I have the ability or control to delete files that are not temporary?
