I am bringing up a topic that may be outdated, but facing this problem and recalling a much simpler solution than what's mentioned here (the first result of my search despite the date ^^), I thought it would be worthwhile to share.

If you want to print a booklet in A5 format with a document in A4 format, you just need to print it as a PDF using PDF Creator.
Then, open this PDF file and do a print (ctrl + P), and there will simply be the option "booklet printing".

To change the print format from A4 to A5, before printing your document, go to printer settings, then in the print options, choose A5 paper instead of A4. Depending on the printers or software used, there may be variations in the display of the print windows. Keep me updated. See you... Chris

solution 1, by selecting the "booklet" option from the printer
The booklet format is supported by most printers, in the print options accessible right next to the printer selection menu. The original document must be A4, portrait format, and the printed document on both sides with the booklet option will print 2 pages on the front, 2 pages on the back, with the correct pagination once the sheets are folded.

solution 1bis
If your printer does not support the booklet option, install a virtual PDF printer that does! PDF Creator or the excellent PDF X-Change, for example, allow this. By selecting the virtual printer and the options above, instead of sending your print job to paper, your document will be sent to a PDF document. You will then just need to print the PDF document to the (paper) printer with the standard options.

solution 2, by adjusting the page print order
Without third-party software or the booklet option, there is still the solution of using the Word "print 2 pages per sheet" option and entering the pages to be printed in the correct order, separated by commas.

It’s a bit complicated to enter the pages in the correct order:
Make sure your document contains a total number of pages N that is a multiple of 4, even if you need to add blank pages at the end. The print order will then be:
N, 1, 2, N-1, N-2, 3, 4, N-3, N-4, 5, 6, N-5 ...

You will notice that the first number of each group of 4 is a sequence N, N-2, N-4, N-6... (even pages in descending order)
The 2nd number of each group of 4 is a series 1, 3, 5, 7... (odd pages in ascending order)
The 3rd number of each group of 4 is a series 2, 4, 6, 8... (even pages in ascending order)
The 4th number of each group of 4 is a sequence N-1, N-3, N-5, N-7... (odd pages in descending order)

for 4 pages: 4,1,2,3
for 8 pages: 8,1,2,7,6,3,4,5
for 12 pages: 12,1,2,11,10,3,4,9,8,5,6,7
for 16 pages: 16,1,2,15,14,3,4,13,12,5,6,11,10,7,8,9
for 20 pages: 20,1,2,19,18,3,4,17,16,5,6,15,14,7,8,13,12,9,10,11
