Hello,
my PC shuts down as soon as I plug in the power supply, with or without the battery. I tried another power supply, same problem. I had this issue with Vista, I migrated to Linux, no improvement. Just to clarify, the PC doesn't turn off when I'm in the BIOS, and under Windows, it didn't reboot when it was in safe mode. Thank you for your help.

    Hello,

    So according to your text, the problem isn't electrical... How were you able to migrate to Linux if the PC shuts down immediately...?

    Try this PC (without brand and without name or model) with a live CD under Linux and leave it for half an hour to see if it shuts down too...

    If it’s OK, then it's Windows that is corrupted... or a defect in the hard drive...

    Or the CPU cooling isn't functioning properly...

    Anyway, so you tried without the RAM, without the hard drive... and it works fine on battery... all this is strange.

    I’m tempted to say that you have an electrical/electronic problem with your charger... or at the charger socket on the motherboard of the PC... is it not a bit "loose"?
    Isn't the wire twisted...? the output power may be degraded, the number of Volts and Amperes should be written on it... it would be good to test it by trying to light a car bulb (a turn signal bulb first and then a headlight) to see if it holds the power well... and run your hand along the cable, looking for hot spots...? during the power on.

      Hi, well mine disappeared too!!
      Well, I disassembled the PC and extracted the power cord from the motherboard. It's a bit frayed in one spot, but I tested it and I've got 19v at the end.
      From the power socket to the motherboard connector, I have 4 wires, I assume 2 for power and 2 for battery charging, can you confirm this?
      I'm going to order one anyway, 20€ but at least it will give me a clean socket and a non-frayed ribbon. I hope that's the issue, I doubt it because micro cuts have never turned off my PC.... Anyway, thanks for the help.

    Hi, sorry, here's the beast: Acer Aspire 8920. I migrated to Linux Studio by putting my hard drive in another PC and without any difficulty. I specify that I overwrote Vista, which I no longer wanted. I have already tried a live CD, same result, the PC reboots. So it's definitely a hardware issue. I reapplied thermal paste on the processor and graphics card; I will still check the temperatures. But there is no problem when I'm on battery without power. Strange!!

    In my opinion, installing Linux on the hard drive from another PC doesn't work or works very poorly because the drivers are adapted to the hardware of that PC, which is not the same as the other one...???

    Do you have signs like beeps... keyboard lights, etc.?
    Are the fans running..? Is there no dust between the fins of the heatsink..?
    Remove the hard drive, the graphics card, and the memory sticks and turn it on for half an hour; you should be able to hear by the noise if it stops, as well as the keyboard lights.
    Then, you can connect the screen to the VGA output of the motherboard and place only one RAM stick and start the PC with the live CD (still without the hard drive)

    Is your BIOS battery good..?

    And see what happens.

      Thank you for the help.
      No beep, laptop keyboard lights okay.
      The fan is running, PC is open, cleaned. I tested the sticks one by one.
      I'm going to try starting without HDD, GPU, RAM, I'll let you know how it goes. By the way, is that risky?
      The BIOS battery is a month old, my problem is a week old.

    So, the four wires are actually two conductors, the + and the - in duplicate for each.

    They put two of each in parallel to have enough copper cross-section without taking up too much volume in the machine, and it’s more flexible this way; a large cable is stiffer and breaks more easily... That’s it.

    You have 19 V, yes, but how many Amperes can pass without overheating the cable or exceeding the capabilities of the charger block.. ?? The bulb test.

      Re, I just took the test, not without difficulty, I had to disconnect the 4 wires from the white connector plug. Apparently, the wires do not heat up, the bulbs light up well, without flickering or wavering...
      Well, so that's not it then!!?? I also bought a universal power supply with a built-in voltmeter...

    In my opinion, the consumption is lower when in the BIOS, then comes safe mode, which consumes more than the BIOS, but less than the operational Windows; and the most demanding is Windows at full power, with the graphics card functioning (not VGA) and the 64-bit processor.

    I would be tempted to put another power supply in place of the charger; one that outputs 18 to 20 volts with about 5 Amperes of capacity, to see if it does the same thing...?

    Because there are several possibilities that could cause this... it’s not necessarily the power supply.

    -- The processor overheating.
    -- The graphics card overheating or consuming a bit too much.
    -- A battery element that has fluctuations.
    -- Windows making nasty errors... but a good Linux like this https://ubuntu.com/ should do the same thing.

      actually I no longer have Windows, only Ubuntu Studio.
      my new power supply goes to 22V 5A, same results.
      the temperatures are correct during the few minutes of rest.
      I will try to swap my graphics cards with my other PC. But well, this one works fine on battery power.
      first of all, I will try to find a GPU test on Linux.

    If you dismantle it, check the capacitors to see if there are any that are swollen or a power socket with shaky soldering... or the USB ports

    Your issue still makes me think of a processor that's overheating...???

    Yes, it's possible, I want to believe it... but why now after several months of good operation...?

    And also, the processor drivers, what are they...? There's not really a driver, the Windows kernel is its driver...? Moreover, the questions on this subject have remained unanswered...

    I would be quite troubled to find the microprocessor drivers for my PCs..???

    And the driver is the same on battery.. however, there can be a dynamic adaptation of the CPU frequency that goes higher when connected to the charger..

    Would there be any overclocking by chance..?? And by the way, the CPU frequency, what is it... seen with CPUZ... Is it in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications of the processor... it could be that it's not running at the right frequency..

    Same question for the RAM.

        In my opinion, regarding this case, I would initially have said that it was the charger that had lost power (I might be wrong).

        But he says he solved his problem by changing the motherboard (so it wasn’t the charger)... The problem was with the motherboard, and the guy from DELL didn’t elaborate... However (in my opinion), it was a temperature rise issue... Aside from tricky things like... breaks in the multilayer traces of the motherboard, solder that expands when hot, random spikes in power supply voltages... it’s not obvious... but these problems are often related to excessive and repeated temperature elevations... so we come back to it.

        Dust in the exhaust and/or intake grills, a PC too close to the desk or with papers underneath that obstruct intake, lifting it by 5 mm with small wedges at the back, the fan malfunctioning with deposits on its blades, thermal paste that is too old, too dry, too thick, poorly distributed, the processor improperly applied to its heatsink... etc... etc... all these details become important as they accumulate.

        As for the frequency of CPU-Z and also SpeedFan for temperatures with a graphic tracking on the “Charts” tab

        Thank you for the video, I will check it out.
        Otherwise, I disassembled, cleaned, changed the thermal paste, used a ventilated stand, the temperatures don't spike when plugging in the power supply.
        Now, let's see the frequency...
