Hello everyone,
I recently used the knowledge from this forum for an issue with video conversion, see the discussion here
https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-31195579-graver-un-dvd-via-pc#p31224024
But today I am encountering other problems; I will never understand this part of computing and video formats.
So, I filmed my daughter with my little digital camera and the output format is .mov.
I wanted to view these videos on my TV, so I previously put the files on a USB drive and plugged it into the USB port of my TV
But it didn't work, so I converted the files to .avi using Nero Video, and again, I got an error message saying that this type of file is not valid or supported. Yet, on my USB drive, I have two movies with the .avi extension that I can view.
So what's the problem with the files I converted?
Thank you for your help.

Hello
As I explained in my first message, there are two video files in .avi format on the USB drive, and those work. I can watch them on the television.
I used Nero to convert from .mov to .avi, and it was processed through a video editing software because that’s how I converted it before burning, but I didn’t create a film per se since I just wanted to put those files on the USB drive to be able to watch them from the TV.
What should I do to make these videos playable?
Thank you

Hello, your .avi movie, as you say, is compatible because it was made with codecs supported by your TV, and the other one is not. There can be in an AVI container, for example, divx, xvid, dv, etc.
Type AVI on the web
So check the list of codecs supported by your TV
You have Nero, so choose a format other than .avi

Please remember to mark your message as "resolved" if that is the case.

Thank you for your response. I tried to check the codecs supported by the television, but nothing is specified in the manual, so I used Video Free Converter (previously provided by one of your colleagues). I converted the .mov files to .avi and now it works. I can watch the files via USB stick on my television. It’s really a mystery to me how all these conversions sometimes work and sometimes don’t, even though the extension is the same. Only pros like you can understand. For me, it’s too technical.
A thousand thanks for guiding me.
Have a good evening and happy end of year celebrations.

Hello, part of the AVI response is a "container," not a format as is falsely said. A container, as its name suggests, holds the video, audio, text, etc., data that make up a film, but films compiled with various "codecs" (coder-decoder). Type container and codec on the web for more details.
It is very likely that on your TV, this type of file (extension like .mp4) is not included in the list of extensions enumerated by your provider.
On a side note, a video file should, in my opinion, be processed on video editing software that handles .mov, then finalized in a standard compatible format like .wmv, mpg, .mp4, etc... this would eliminate any conversion issues.
