Hello,
Wishing to redefine the default location of the Documents, Images, etc. folders on drive D:, I modified the path (right-click on the original folder, then Location tab), but inadvertently I simply left "D:" and clicked ok. Now it seems that Windows considers the entire root of drive D: as my "My Documents" folder, which is causing chaos. I have, of course, tried to revert it, but Windows refuses. I receive the following error messages:
- if I try to move it back to its original location C:\Users\admin\Documents:
Failed to create the subdirectory list under "D:\System volume information". Access denied.
- if I try to place it in the "correct" location as I initially wanted D:\Documents:
Unable to redirect the parent to a descendant. The specified path is not valid.
How can I properly do what I wanted from the start? Otherwise, how can I return to the original configuration?

Yes, I finally made it, though not without difficulties and after many trials. For anyone who has the same issue: you need to set the correct path for the Personal value in the following two registry keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Right-click on "My Documents" or the folder considered as the root.
Properties --> Location --> Default Location.
And when it asks you to move all your documents, you click "No."
There you go :)
I apologize if it's forbidden to bring up old topics, but having struggled to "unmerge" the My Documents folder from drive D: before stumbling upon this topic, I thought it would be nice to shed some light for those like Max who are wondering what to do with the registry
You need to find the merged folder on drive D: and then do: right-click - properties - location - default value. Write down the original location on a piece of paper if you have a poor memory.
Then, in regedit (accessible via Cortana in Windows 10, I don't remember for earlier versions) follow the path indicated above
Once you arrive at "Shell Folders," rename the "personal" key to its original location (e.g., C:\Users\HervéDumont\Documents)
In "User Shell Folders," rename the "personal" key to %USERPROFILE%[folder name] (I don't know if this is the entry to input on all computers, it was like this for me)
Finally, return to the merged folder and then: right-click - properties - location - default value - OK
A message will ask you to send all items back to drive C: refuse. You will be able to cut and paste all your documents later, or leave them on drive D:
