[Macbook Pro] Saving issue

Solved

Hello,

I've had a MacBook Pro for about a year and a half now, it's a 15-inch mid-2012 model running OS X 10.9.3.

After some unsuccessful searches online, I'm turning to you, so I'm sorry if there's already a discussion on this topic.

My problem is as follows: when I use an application and want to save one or more files to my drive (for example, saving files received via email with Thunderbird or creating something in Word or elsewhere), I use the "Save As" option. That option opens the Finder, which automatically becomes unresponsive (little spinning wheel) and forces me to "Force Quit" the application I was using.

By default, when the Finder appears, the Desktop is often pre-selected in the list on the left (the Finder then tries to display the items on the Desktop). I'm mentioning this because it happened that, for example, "Documents" was pre-selected, and then there was no issue...

I've tried deleting all aliases on my Desktop, recreating them, and I've also performed disk checks... to no avail.

This is not a problem with the applications either, because I've encountered this issue across all applications.

So here it is, has anyone else experienced this bug or have any ideas to help me? It is somewhat debilitating...

Thank you in advance!

    Hello,

    First, update to 10.9.4
Repair permissions or, if necessary, run Onyx.
    Restart Finder (Apple menu/Force Quit/Finder/Restart

    And see what happens.

What is the hard drive's fill rate? Is there more than 10% of its capacity free?

    @cnessy

I will do this update today; in the meantime, memory is probably not an issue as I have 300 Go free out of 450.

I just did a permissions repair using the Disk Utility.

As for relaunching the Finder, I just did that and tried again, with no success. Note that in "Force Quit," it’s the application that is not responding and not the Finder. Could the Finder crash the application?

      The Finder can cause malfunctions.
We will see after the update because, under 10.9.3 there were bugs. I don't know if they were the cause of these issues, but who knows!!

    I just updated.
When I tried to save attachments received by email, the problem is still there.

Note that I'm using the email application as an example because when I want to save, the Desktop is always pre-selected.
I just noticed while trying on Word, where Documents was pre-selected, that I was able to access the Desktop without any issues... That's already an improvement; it wasn't the case before, I believe...

I have 160 MB of data on my Desktop; could that be the source of the problem?

Why keep all this data on the desktop? It would be better in specific, well-organized folders/files on the hard drive. I don't know if having them there on the desktop is distracting, but...
There might be a problem in the preferences that are set as Apple intended: reopening the last apps opened before shutdown (a security precaution, in case any documents were forgotten)
But I no longer remember where that is set, I don't constantly work under Mavericks.
In any case, the problem is not normal.

You need to quit the open applications before shutdown, but there should be a checkbox to uncheck in the preferences.

      Bug fixed (I think).
It's a data folder and an executable inside that seem to have been the source of the problem... It's not heavy, but there are hundreds of files.

This folder is on my desktop because the software runs from the terminal, so it makes access easier instead of having to chain the "cd" commands. Anyway.

What’s strange is that I had already tried to move it a long time ago when I was attempting to solve the problem... Why does it work today? That's a big question!

Thank you for your help and patience, cnessy. :)

    Hello,

    Hi cnessy,

With "Save As...", the default destination is always the one previously chosen by the application in question,

I just quickly read the topic, and I saw that you're talking about having several aliases on the desktop...

When you select "Save As...", the system suggests the Desktop and, for example, in column view... it will then refresh the links of all the aliases present on the desktop so that you can potentially navigate through the hierarchy. If there are many aliases, this can take some time, and if the aliases point to other aliases, it's even worse.
Generally, the desktop should be as empty as possible; when it's cluttered, it can slow things down. The desktop is not a folder like the others; it's better to use the Dock or the sidebar of a Finder window to place your favorites.

Try to clean up the desktop. Maybe even delete everything while testing, and do this after cleaning all caches with Onyx or iTweax..

Personally, most of the time, I have absolutely nothing on my desktop.

      Hello,

I had thought the same thing a few weeks ago; I deleted and then recreated all the aliases without success, and I cleared the desktop (which wasn't that full anyway) without success either.

Indeed, the default destination is still the previous choice, so I forced myself to work in my folders; that's how I had managed to get by until now.
But I usually prefer to work on the Desktop, and there’s no reason why it shouldn't work, which is why I came to ask for your advice today.

In any case, as I was saying, the issue seems to be resolved. Thank you both again. :)
