01/01/1900 = 1, the start of dates for Excel.
00/01/1900 (=31/12/1899) is the value 0 if you set it to date format. Change it back to Standard format if you want to see 0.

Add a check to detect an empty cell

and a second one. if the VLOOKUP does not succeed

ISERROR(VLOOKUP($C7,'sheet1'!$C$2:$S$100,3,FALSE));

in this example, we display zero if it's false. we can put "" instead if the cell is not used for calculations
