Hello,
I have a big problem, for a while now in my room, I occasionally hear a loud and sharp sound (2 to 3 times a day) like firecrackers being thrown on the ground or the snapping of a whip. I thought I localized the area more or less, it must be coming from my PC/screen setup. I suspect it's an electrical arc, and since I don't want to end up like Claude François, I need a little help identifying which equipment might be making this noise...
So I have a pretty old power strip plugged into:
- a big desktop PC
- a flat PC monitor (which I just got and the noise was there before)
- a stereo PC speaker/subwoofer
- 2 laptop chargers
If you could help me, that would be really nice. The circuit breakers don’t trip, so could this noise be coming from my desktop PC? From the power strip? Maybe from the wall outlet the power strip is plugged into? Or something else?
Thank you for your help.
Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 26.0

Thank you for your help already.
So, I changed the power strip, I won't know until tomorrow or the day after if that was it, so no noise until then^^
Indeed, there is a switch on it.
Regarding the sockets and the ground, are you talking about the sockets on the power strip?
If so, yes, they are grounded, and the wall socket it's plugged into as well.
Could it not be coming from the PC?
Because this noise is only present when I use devices on the power strip (PC, monitor, amplifier, chargers), whereas at night I turn off the computer but the power strip remains on, although all the devices plugged into it are off.

And I hope it's the power strip (which might have a sort of faulty connection, I'm not an electrician xD)
And yes, I was also talking about your gear, do all the plugs of your equipment have a "slot" to "accommodate" the ground? Or do they only have two prongs? (Normally your PC has grounding) so maybe one plug is loose in the strip and causes a sort of faulty connection.
Otherwise, it could come from any device consuming electricity on your strip, including the PC. (Maybe even your wall socket, which I hope not!) After, if it still happens with the other strip, we'd have to test the devices one by one, which can be annoying and time-consuming :/ (but better that than something else)
Anyway, keep me posted (no pun intended), and especially be careful not to short-circuit your head if you have to fiddle with the plug(s) if it keeps acting up.
