Read an external hard drive on a TV without a USB port

Hello, I've been looking for the most economical way to watch (in full HD 1080 P) movies from an external hard drive on my TV, which has an HDMI port but no USB port, for three days now. First observation, this doesn't seem to be a very common problem since I've had a hard time effectively researching the topic!

So I have quite a few leads, but ideally, I would still like to switch to USB 3 to avoid having to repurchase everything in a few years, especially since the performance is enticing!

- Buy a simple USB 3 external hard drive (minimum €60 new) + a full HD USB/HDMI adapter €60, so €120

- Buy a multimedia external hard drive minimum €150 for USB 3

- Buy a DVD or another device with a USB port, but in that case, the question is: what is the video output if we connect an external hard drive to the USB of a simple DVD player? Can we achieve full HD?

Do you have a good plan to recommend? Or an avenue not yet explored? (besides changing TVs, obviously)

Thank you very much for the help!

Configuration: Windows 7 / Chrome 32.0.1700.76

Hello,
Have you found a solution? We have the same problem and having to go through a PC to watch movies from the external hard drive seems ridiculous to me. What's the point of buying the hard drive then!! If you have the solution, I'm interested.
Good evening
