CD DVD drive failure on Acer laptop

Question

Hello,
Well, everything is in the title, my PC no longer reads any CDs or DVDs for the past 2 days. I haven’t done anything specific, and suddenly it doesn’t work anymore. Is my drive broken? However, my computer is just a bit over 1 year old. In fact, it manages to read only one CD, which is the installation CD for Neuf Telecom. I don’t understand why it won’t work anymore, and I have to say it really annoys me!
If someone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

For my part, my drive wasn't working anymore either, so I went to Control Panel/System and Maintenance/System/Device Manager/DVD/CD-ROM drives and I noticed that one of my icons had a black arrow on it, so I right-clicked and clicked on enable, my drive is working again. This problem is often caused by burning software that modifies the registry in the BIOS and disables the DVD/CD-ROM drives.

Hello.
Try going to Device Manager (Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager).
Uninstall your DVD drive.
Restart, and it will detect it again and reinstall (Windows XP will find the right drivers).
If it doesn't work, wait for a response from someone more skilled than me.

Well, I must say I have the same problem, but not with 1 Acer PC, but with 2 Acer PCs

My first Acer laptop, 1353LM bought in 2002, the DVD suddenly stopped working in 2005, I remember, it was a Saturday ;-(
The drive reads all kinds of CDs, burns CDs, but nothing on DVDs. It tells me there are no discs. Unable to read, burn, or watch a movie, ... nada
I tried with Nero 6, NTI V5, Alcohol 120% doesn't work.
I spent quite a bit of time trying to fix the problem. Reinstalling drivers, reinstalling the entire PC, even tried flashing the drive with a Sony boot. Something I read on the Internet. Nothing worked.

So, well, I bought another ACER desktop PC at the end of 2005. And it worked. With NTI V7, with Nero 6, and then three weeks ago, THE SAME THING. It no longer reads DVDs, no longer burns DVDs, nothing works. But CDs work.

At first, I thought it was my portable DVD that was dead. But now, I'm no longer sure at all...

What if it was Nero 6 that messed them up??? It's strange because it's the same software that I installed on both PCs while NTI are different versions. I haven't tried the whole battery of drivers, managers, ... on the desktop because I think it's REALLY strange that both my PCs are no longer working.

Do you have Nero on your PC???

I have an Acer Aspire 9420 laptop that is a little over a year old, running Windows XP Media Center.
My CD/DVD drive is recognized by Windows, "this device is working" according to Windows. I can read and burn CDs, but nothing works regarding DVDs (movies & data). I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, still nothing!

Can someone tell me if this is a software or hardware issue?

I’m trying to help a friend who has the same issue. In our case, we actually changed the burner after doing all the aforementioned manipulations, but it worked normally for the time it took to make 5 or 6 burns, and now it’s slow (1 hour and 30 minutes to burn 6 DivX on a DVD, same for copying data from an inserted disk, etc.).
So it doesn’t seem to be the burner after all. I hope my attempt offers you something, as I must say I’m out of arguments here.
Let’s just say I’m closely following this post.

I had the same problem 3 days ago, I took my PC to Carrefour's customer service, they asked me to call the hotline...

I called them, they asked me about my problem, they told me to format under Vista, as they think the problem comes from Linux :/ since it no longer detects my burned CDs/DVDs at boot :(

So to please them I switched to Vista, and the same problem :p

I was scared ^^ didn't want to stay on Windows xD.

So I called back, they gave me a deposit code, and tomorrow I will take it back to Carrefour.

Let’s hope they change it for me quickly, but I think the problem comes from a batch of drives, as the hotline didn't look very far into my issue.

by "tinkering," I managed to get it to work in DVD mode but it doesn't read any CDs anymore. I'm changing the drive at the end of the week; if that's the solution, I'll keep you updated!!!

Well, all of this reassures me in a way, I had the same problem with my Acer laptop.
My laptop no longer reads CDs and DVDs, only CD and DVD+.
I've tried everything to see what could be causing this, but nothing.
Recently I formatted my PC, I had hope that it would work again, but no, still not.
I'm considering changing it because if the problem resurfaces as mentioned in a previous post, I would have changed it for nothing.
If anyone has a solution????

I have an Acer Aspire 9300 laptop that reads CDs without any problem but doesn't recognize DVDs... and this has been going on for 2-3 days... and I'm not very good with computers!! I tried restarting the laptop (multiple times :) ) but nothing works.... :(

This is becoming serious; to all be in this same predicament!
Who has found a concrete solution?! Or should we just resign ourselves to buying an internal drive?

Hello,  I had opened another topic, but it has remained unanswered and I see that we all have more or less the same issue => ACER;  I have an ACER laptop with a Toshiba CD/DVD drive. I've just noticed that my drive doesn't read anything anymore. It also doesn't appear in My Computer (named -Computer- in Vista). However, in Device Manager, it is reported as working. The driver download is up to date.  The laptop is barely over a year old and this drive has probably been used maybe 10 times at most.  So here it is, if anyone has ideas, keeping in mind that I'm not a computer engineer, so for complicated tinkering, it's going to be a struggle, I'm looking forward to hearing from you. I think a few have understood very well that the reading problem is more likely to come from ACER rather than from Windows and/or burning software.  I have an ACER ASPIRE 3003WLMi, which is 2-3 years old and I have a dead battery that has been dead since I got this computer. The original screen had dead pixels, the after-sales service changed it, and the screen gave up the ghost about a year ago, which I replaced. Finally, my CD-DVD drive has the same problem as most people here, which is that it reads original or burned CDs but nothing with DVDs except for commercially purchased and/or rented movie DVDs.  So! Did everyone get it or will I need to draw diagrams?  ACER is garbage!!!  I am thinking of replacing the drive with a new one, but... I will avoid buying ACER and go for a generic or another compatible brand instead.  Another option is to get an external CD-DVD burner, but the problem is that it's not bootable. In the BIOS, you can boot from a CD-DVD drive, hard disk, floppy disk, and other things, but nothing at all from USB!  Anyway (the hiccup) ;-) if someone practices magic or knows someone who practices magic, I'm all ears! (I can see no other solution for the drive problem!)  I'm following this post...............................

Hello,  Technically, I don't understand all the terms (bootable, not bootable?!!). But what’s certain is that I will rather opt for an external hard drive. At least for a hundred euros, I will have equipment that will allow me to read CDs/DVDs and install programs on my computer if necessary, while being able to back up all my data. Whereas if I get it repaired, it will cost me an arm (let's say about a hundred euros as well) for just a drive (and how long will it work???). Plus, I need my computer and the service center will keep it for a month.  But well, I already had the hinge problem (see the topic on the subject), and now it’s a lot.  Otherwise, is there still no one to give us a real reason that could explain the disappearance of the drive????  Thanks to all.

Hello,  In my case, I can read CDs and DVDs, but when I want to watch a movie, the image is very often choppy, and it even tends to crash completely....  On the other hand, for the past few days, I can't burn anything; I start the process, and my piece-of-junk computer acts like everything is fine, but that's not true since the CD remains blank but unusable afterwards. I noticed that the little red LED on the burner used to blink during the burning phase, but now it stays green.  My computer is an Aspire 9300 trying to run on Vista, the first and definitely the last time I buy this brand; since I got it, I've had nothing but compatibility problems and other "little" issues.  So if you, who are reading this, are about to buy an Aspire (Acer), I strongly advise you to avoid it at all costs!!! For the rest, also choose XP; it's simpler, and all the drivers and programs are easier to find.  The problems started when I tried to use Nero 9 (which, by the way, is very ugly compared to version 8).

Hello,  So, I have a slightly different little issue. My CD/DVD drive was no longer working and it didn't show up on my computer (called "Computer" under Vista). I uninstalled it and then restarted the computer so it would reinstall it by recognizing it as new hardware. The drive reappeared and worked. I tested it with DVDs and CDs.  And since then, it just keeps doing that: appearing, disappearing, over and over again, without me being able to find any logic to the situation. This morning for example, it appeared at startup and 5 minutes later it was gone (and therefore not working either).  I admit this leaves me perplexed (and not just me, by the way).  Thanks for your upcoming ideas.

Well, here's the solution, it worked for me!!!

So:

start > run > devmgmt.msc > right-click on the drive and "scan for hardware changes"
The driver will be reinstalled, then a new drive will appear, and there you go, everything works like before,

Hi, I took the time to read your email and I’d like to give you some tips. It may be that you have installed software on your PC that is incompatible with your system, which caused everything. So, you can, and it’s the most effective solution, reinstall your system with the system disk after backing up your data. To do this, go to the backup center and put your data, preferably on an external disk. That way, after the fresh installation of the system, whether it's Vista or XP, you shouldn't have any more problems.  The second solution would be to open your control panel and go to update drivers or add hardware. You'll see your CD/DVD drive (Matshita...). Then, you just need to open the properties, click on update drivers, which will allow Windows Update to search for the most current driver for your drive on the web. It will ask you if you want to search for the driver on the web or on your computer; you can first try to search on your computer by inserting the installation disk.  Otherwise, you can install Divx for Windows, it sometimes works. Bye and good luck!

Hello, I had the same problem with my Acer Aspire 7720ZG. Even going to customer service didn't change anything. It was even sent back to Acer and returned in an even worse condition. Solution: buy a new CD/DVD drive to connect via USB.

Hello,  I just want to clarify that my reader, which was already no longer recognized despite multiple attempts and numerous contacts with IT professionals, simply slipped through my fingers a few weeks ago. It came out of its compartment by itself like a slice of bread popping out of a toaster while I was moving it from my desk to another room.  In short, for now, I can't do anything because I need my laptop for my job searches and therefore can't part with it for the weeks required for a potentially hypothetical repair, and I don't really have the means to invest precisely because of this long period of unemployment (plus I also need to find a car...). But I'm starting to look at a few models because I'm worried about the worst in terms of breakdowns and bad surprises.  In short, ACER is over.

I'm in the same boat as you, I have an Acer Aspire 5710z and the reader/burner doesn't read CDs or DVDs.
At first, I thought like you that the problem came from a driver, but after reinstalling everything, still nothing.
I don't think the problem is with the driver or Windows, but really with the computer itself because in an emergency a friend lent me an external DVD drive and, to my great surprise, it wasn't detected once connected... I tried with 2 other drives, same thing...
I don't have Nero or NTI, I've never burned anything from the laptop...

And as luck would have it, this happens just a few weeks after the warranty expires... A conspiracy at ACER?

Hi, have you considered, in case it's not a software issue, replacing the ribbon cable that connects the DVD drive to the motherboard of the laptop, as it may be defective?  I don't know if this will solve your problem, but it is possible that in some cases the cable works poorly and therefore the lens of the drive does too. Hello, For my part, the problem is solved!  I had already tried to format and reinstall Vista but in vain, even after reinstalling all the drivers it still didn't work...  I am a computer science student and my school allows me, through MSDNAA, to get Windows Seven for free. For over a month, I had installed it on my desktop and wanted to put it on my laptop, and miracle, my DVD drive works again after the installation of Seven!  So for now it's working again, but for how long? And did the problem come from Vista then?

Well, strangely for me, when I boot the PC from the drive with the Vista or Seven installation CD, it works; the problem only occurred when Vista was running... Are you sure it doesn't work even when you boot from it?

I'm not a big user of the CD/DVD drive, but as luck would have it, when I needed it, it doesn't work!  Personally, it doesn't recognize anything, neither the CD nor anything else.  So I looked in the device manager and opened the properties of the drive (where there's a yellow triangle with an exclamation point) and here's what it says:  "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. This driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)  Click 'Search for solutions' to send information about this device to Microsoft and check if a solution is available."  I tried updating the driver, disabling and re-enabling it, searched for solutions via Windows!! Nothing!!  I have an Acer Aspire 5310, well it's already 3 years old, but I didn't think it would give up so quickly for the drive, especially since I've only used it about 20 times in 3 years!!!  If anyone has a solution (I've tried some from those given on the forum) I'm all ears! :-)

I had the same problem with a DVD-ROM not recognized under Windows 7 installed on an ACER computer. It seems that a recent USB connection of a bootable hard drive caused some issues. Reinstalling the driver and removing unnecessary devices did not resolve the problem; there is a yellow exclamation mark and error (code 32) in the device details.  After some research on the Internet, I found the foolproof solution:  - Type REGEDIT in the small search box of Windows at the bottom left of your interface to access the registry.  - Find the following path in the registry tree:  - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}  - Delete all files referencing Upper and Lower filters (and only those!)  - Restart your system and "Oh miracle," your DVD ROM is back.

Hello,  On my side, I have an ACER ASPIRE 5734Z, with Windows 7, and the problem is very similar!  The CDs are read and burned by the drive without any issues. However, the DVDs only work when they feel like it... It might work instantly, or it might take 2 hours before it decides to read it (by opening and closing the drive, spinning the DVD on its axis, ...), and sometimes, it simply refuses to read the DVD... It doesn't even show up in "My Computer"; it tells me that there is no disk in the drive...  So even with Windows 7, it's not the miracle solution...  If anyone has a solution...

Hello. So, I went back through the responses a bit, and I find it strange that we all had this problem with Acer. Like all of you, my drive failed suddenly without me doing anything special, and I'm sure it's not damaged; the only thing is that it's not recognized by the PC when I try to launch a CD, and after trying to reinstall the driver, I also got the message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. This driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Click 'Find solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and check for a solution." But nothing works. And strangely, my PC is about to be a year old soon, so I'm hesitating to contact customer service, wondering if there's a way to fix the problem myself, or if apparently the extreme case is to get an external drive?
