Hello,
Everything is in the title... My Canon MP500 printer was working perfectly until the day before yesterday. And then without warning, it wouldn’t turn back on yesterday morning.
Since then, I have been looking for an explanation, a solution to the problem. After some research online, it seems that this malfunction is very common with Canon printers ("planned obsolescence," what a lovely term for such a despicable practice...). This seems to fit the bill quite closely.
Has anyone found a solution to the problem, or do I need to throw away my nearly new printer?
If that’s the case, I solemnly swear here, and the whole world is a witness, that I will never again buy a product from the Canon brand. And I encourage everyone reading this to do the same.
Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 15.0

We can't say that the problem has been solved. I have rather decided to change it, without being able to throw it away just yet, in case someone finds a miraculous solution to the problem; you can always dream.
In the meantime, I've bought another one, from the brand Epson, on the Darty website. But the troubles continue since a week after receiving it, and after barely having printed a dozen pages, a message suddenly appeared: "Paper jam." However, there is no paper stuck inside. Result: this printer is blocked again. I went to Darty, and they offered me nothing but to send it to the customer service for them to examine it. They will then make a decision, probably an exchange. In the meantime, I'm once again without a printer and forced to wait. I'm killing two birds with one stone: never again at Darty and never again Epson.
Long live progress, it's great. In the meantime, not everyone benefits from it in the same way, and I'm convinced that this kind of practice by big brands greatly contributes to the prevailing gloom.-
Same goes for my father's; it stopped suddenly with no warning signs, it smells like planned obsolescence, as you say. Then this bunch of garbage wonders why we turn away from their crap. When we know the price it costs, on one hand, the resources that were needed to build their crap, and the energy that will still be needed to dismantle it, we are disgusted.
