Hi everyone!
Here's my problem:
I have a PALM Tungsten E, but I don't have the installation CD that goes with it, so how can I synchronize it with my PC locally via the USB cable? Knowing that my PALM has HotSync, and I have installed HotSync and ActiveSync on my computer. When I attempt a synchronization from the PALM, it displays: "Unable to establish a connection between your handheld and Palm Desktop. Check the configuration and try again."
Thanks in advance!
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 1.0.7

Good evening everyone,

Phil38's answer is the right one:
First, download the palmdesktopwin414fr version from the Palm website.
Uninstall the Palm applications already installed on your computer.
Don't forget to delete the residual directories in "Programs Files."
Then, install palmdesktopwin414fr via the setup once decompressed.
Be careful, before connecting the Palm to the USB port, make sure that no USB device is waiting for configuration.
Once the Palm is turned on,
make sure the synchronization settings indicate "Station/cable"
connect it to the port. Windows will detect it. Let it happen...
Then, by selecting HotSync from the Palm, the synchronization occurs seamlessly.

It becomes magical after so many troubles.

Hello everyone,

If this can help someone, here is the procedure I received from Palm, knowing that if we can't reinstall everything, we lose everything. One piece of advice, though: do it when you're relaxed, starting early in the morning because Palm hasn't found anything simpler... (and if it works, let me know):

The POI files are to be installed using the ViaMichelin software.
For its use, we invite you to contact ViaMichelin at 08 21 230 682.

To resolve your data issue, we invite you to do the following if all the data is also on your PC and not just on the Palm.
To solve this problem, we recommend resetting your Palm and then deleting any data that may cause conflicts before resynchronizing.

When you perform a hard reset, all data contained in your Palm is erased. Formats, preferences, and other settings revert to the factory defaults. You can restore the data synchronized with your computer through synchronization.

Follow the instructions below to back up your personal data:
1. Make sure Palm? Desktop is closed.
2. Double-click the 'My Computer' icon on the Windows® desktop, or from the 'Start' menu.
3. Open the 'C' drive, or the drive on which the Palm? software was installed.
4. Double-click the 'Palm?' folder to open it. (The default location is C:\Program Files\palmOne or palm)
5. Right-click on the ('user') folder (Note: the 'user' folder may carry an abbreviated version of your actual username) then select 'Copy'.
6. Minimize all open windows.
7. Right-click in an empty area of the Windows® desktop and choose 'Paste'.

Please follow the procedure below to reset your Palm.
1. Press and hold the power button
2. Use a paperclip or the provided pin to press in the reset hole on the back of the device for about 3 seconds.
3. Hold the power button down until the Palm logo appears on the screen
4. Wait for the Palm to ask if you wish to erase all data.
5. Press the up scroll button to answer yes to the question.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your handheld.

Note: If nothing appears on the screen during the above procedure, please still follow it to completion. If the problem persists, charge your Palm for about 15 minutes and then repeat the procedure.

To prevent faulty applications from being reinstalled, please follow the instructions below:

1. On your PC, click 'Start', 'Programs' and select 'Windows Explorer(r)'
2. In the explorer, click the '+' sign in front of the 'Palm' folder
3. Click the '+' in front of your user folder.
4. Right-click on the 'Backup' directory and select 'copy'
5. Minimize the explorer window and return to the Windows desktop.
6. On the Windows desktop, right-click and select 'Paste' (this will create a folder named 'Backup' on the desktop)
7. Return to Windows Explorer.
8. Double-click on the 'User' Backup folder in the right part of the screen, you will see the list of installed applications.
9. Click once on the first file in the list.
10. Click 'Edit' in the menu bar and click 'Select All'
11. On your PC keyboard, press the 'Delete' key. Click 'Yes' if asked to confirm the deletion.

To recover data from your Palm, you need to perform a 'custom synchronization':

1. Click on the HotSync® Manager icon in the Windows taskbar, then select 'Customize'
2. Double-click on 'Calendar' then tick the box 'Desktop replaces handheld'. Then click 'OK'
3. Repeat the procedure for 'Address Book', 'Notes', 'Tasks', 'Notepad', 'Expenses', and 'Voice Memo'.
4. Synchronize.

You can now reinstall your third-party applications one by one to determine which one was causing the problem.

Best regards.

Hello,

I have a Palm Tungsten E2 and I just changed my computer. I wanted to reinstall the programs from the CD-ROM on my new PC. No problems with Palm Desktop, but it’s not working with Doc To Go.

I managed to install DocToGo without any issues. However, at the end of the first synchronization, the log indicates "DocToGo cannot identify the user. Access error to the DocToGo database".
If I then try to open the DocToGo folder on my computer, it doesn’t open and the error message is "This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way".

I contacted technical support and they told me that I need to install a new version compatible with Vista. I’m willing to do that, but I can only find paid updates for Doc To Go on the Dataviz website... which I find outrageous and absurd!

What should I do... Thank you for your (many) responses and free tips!

Hello
I see that you have a Tungsten E2, I also have one that was given to me but I don't have the installation CD, would you see any problem in making a copy of your CD for me? Of course, I will cover the shipping costs. Please, I’ve been sending messages everywhere but I never get a response.
Thank you in advance.

For your issue, it's Hotsync that is not active on your PC,
you need to launch it on the PC before connecting the Palm

I have tried everything, I downloaded the software from the internet knowing that I do not have the installation CD, and my computer is running Windows XP, could this be the source of my problem?

I need this Palm for work and I've been stuck for a week now, it's a disaster! Can someone help me????

Hello,

I'm having the same problem as all of you; I can no longer sync the data from my Palm Tungsten E to my new PC. It shows me the following error message: Unable to establish a connection between your handheld and the Palm Desktop.

I've already looked quite a bit but I can't figure out where it's coming from.

Thanks for your help because I'm starting to lose it.

I'm good, I finally solved my sync issue.

1- Uninstallation of palmDesktop (and especially deleting the files in c:\program Files\palm, during the first uninstall, I didn't do this and it didn't solve my issue)
2- Reset of the Palm (I don't know if it's essential but still)
3- Reinstallation of palmOne retrieved from the Palm site

and everything is finally working.

Hello,

Many people are having this synchronization issue; could we get some clarification on how to resolve it (I did a sync on 04/10/2007 and back then it worked. Since then, I've reformatted my drive)?

1- I believe palmDescktop doesn't exist, palmDesktop would seem more accurate, but even I searched for palmDes and I can't find anything. I do have a palmone directory (on my D:\ partition), but could we know which directory or the exhaustive list of files to delete?

3- Especially since it's better to be able to reinstall afterwards! Because the Palm site seems pretty locked for non-subscribers... Also, why reinstall Palmone from the site rather than from the original CD?

If someone can provide me with some answers so that I can finally install the radar POI files version 4 on my Palm Tungsten E2, thank you very much.

(As if that's not counting the other issue of connecting that cursed Palm once installed in the car and the infamous error messages "unreliable GPS position" and "GPS port not open" - How can Palm produce such products and shut their site to any inquiries?)

Hello everyone.

I bought a second-hand Palm Tungsten E with GPS online.
I found the manual online. However, I'm missing the installation CD that wasn't provided.
So, I'm looking for a second-hand CD.

Thank you and best wishes.

Hello,

Which Tungsten E are you talking about? I have the Tungsten E2 with all the necessary accessories, including the CDs. I can possibly lend it out. Given the number of problems with this device...

Best regards.

Hello Scanman

Thank you very much for your offer to lend me your CD, that would resolve my issues.

My Palm does not have a number. There is only "Tungsten E" marked on the device (on the front and on the label on the back where the serial number is).

Keep me posted on the procedure

Thanks and have a good day

Hello Scanman,

I just bought a Palm Tungsten E2 in France and upon arriving home in New Caledonia, I realize that the 2 installation CDs for the synchronization software included are for MAC and not for PC... a store mixing error!!!
In one of your messages, you offered to lend yours to another user. Would you be willing to lend it to me as well... despite the geographical distance that separates us????

Thank you so much in advance for your quick response.

Hello ONIRIS,

I wonder who sold you this Palm and why you’re not asking them for the right CDs. I might need my CDs to reinstall everything (since my Palm doesn't want to sync to download the location of the new speed cameras), but if I can help out, I can always lend them to you if it’s not too long. You would then need to give me your address and let me know if you could at least reimburse me for the shipping costs.

See you soon

Hello Scanman,

Wow! What a quick response! It hasn't been the same for me as I've had to be "in the bush" and the chances of internet connections are quite rare.
Thank you for your offer to lend me your installation CD for the Palm Tungsten E2 version PC. That’s generous of you.
Actually, I bought this Palm at Fnac in Paris and I'm not able to make any claims from a distance (...).
Of course, I will reimburse you for your shipping costs (in euros) in the return mail of your CD. A letter to New Caledonia takes about a week via priority mail.
Could you contact me directly at my email fbazenet@lagoon.nc so that I can reply with my postal address?

Best regards

Hello ght13,

The Tungsten E seems to be the older version of the Tungsten E2, and I can't certify that my installation CD for the second version is suitable for installing the first version.
You can always ask about compatibility on the Palm website (there's a contact section), the technicians respond quite quickly; I've already asked them several questions.
Otherwise, depending on where you live, I can always help you out with the CD.

To unlock a Palm, you need to do a hard reset, not a soft reset.
The soft reset simply consists of pressing the small hole at the back of the Palm with a pin.
The hard reset is done by pressing the hole while simultaneously pressing the power button. Then, release the pin and finally the power button.
If the action is well-timed, the Palm will restart and offer the choice of language.
Be careful, as this type of reset erases all programs and saved data (a sync is advisable if you
want to recover your data).

I hope this information will be useful to you.

Hi
I performed a hard reset and my Palm Te stays on the "palm powered" image, what should I do to reactivate it? Thank you for your response.

Of course, I probably still have that software, but are you sure it's worth it? This Palm is a "piece of junk", excuse my expression, I struggled with it for years because it only wanted to connect once every other time in the car... Now it doesn't work at all and Viamichelin has stopped its activities on top of that. So when I think that you can now find devices ten times more functional for €50...
