Origin online login currently unavailable

Hello,

Like many people, I have a problem with Origin. I bought The Sims 3 and was asked to install Origin. Now that it's done, I can't connect; it keeps replying "you must be online when logging in for the first time." I want to specify that I have indeed created my account online, I have confirmed my email address, and my internet connection is quite good.
I installed Origin on my external hard drive since that’s where I want to install the Sims, so the solutions provided in other posts are not applicable to my case.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 22.0

Hello. Big update, but I have a list of solutions/explanations:
    - windows: disable the use of the proxy:
    Go to
    Start Menu
    >
    Control Panel
    >
    Network and Internet
    >
    Internet Options
. A window opens, go to the
    Connections
    tab, click on
    LAN settings
    . Uncheck everything in the
    Proxy server
    section. Validate/apply the changes.
    Firewall:
It seems that the firewall (either Windows’ or another) often causes problems with game clients, especially for their updates.
    You need to add
    origin.exe
to your firewall exceptions. Search on Google for the procedure for your firewall. If the problem persists, temporarily disable the firewall: it seems that it does not allow Origin to update (because it is during this time that the online connection is weirdly unavailable...). Generally, you will be able to reactivate your firewall once the update is complete. Even if Origin is still blocked by the firewall (in theory, this only happens for updates, but you never know), reactivate it as soon as you can: the firewall is vital for your PC's security!

Note that the firewall configuration applies to all video game distribution platforms (Steam, Origin, Uplay, ...).
