Mailto link not working anymore

Question

Hello,

I have recently encountered a problem that I cannot resolve. When I click on a "mailto" link, Internet Explorer 7 displays the message
"unable to perform this operation because the default client is not installed correctly"
and then opens around forty blank browser windows. This problem occurs both in Firefox and in IE, but the forty windows that open are always in IE, even if I clicked on a "mailto" link from Firefox. My email software was Thunderbird. I switched to Outlook Express to see if it would help, but the problem persists. I also checked the registry editor. The registry key for the "mailto" value is correctly set. I don't know what to do anymore. One more thing: I am using Vista.

I had the same problem and I found the solution:  Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs > E-mail > Mozilla Thunderbird  and there you go! I hope it works the same for you.

Hello I had this problem back when I was using Outlook Express with Internet Explorer 6. It was because IE6 was not set as my default browser.

What is defined in Control Panel -> Folder Options -> file types: (NONE) URL:MailTo Protocol?

Hello,  If this doesn't work, in the Internet Options / Programs window, press the Reset Web Settings.. button.

Control Panel -> Folder Options -> file types:
(NONE) URL:MailTo Protocol (it's practically at the bottom when sorted by file types)
there you need to click on "advanced" then in the window named "Modify File Type"
there's a line named "open"
click on modify.
I have "C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"
it's the command line for Outlook 2000 to open emails by default.
by doing this it will work, because that's what I did to solve the problem.
