Hello,

As an author, I can tell you that it's based on the number of characters, not the number of pages, which can vary greatly depending on the font used, line spacing, and space between paragraphs... The character count is the only thing that can give an estimate of the final page count.

Arial Black 12 is quite large. I'd say that on a "normal" A4 Word format, 48 pages should roughly correspond to 100,000 characters... Only you can see that.

For reference, the pocket books I've written have 250 pages and between 250,000 and 350,000 characters.

Now, I do technical writing. For novels, we don't impose, of course, a character count, and the publisher also plays with the font size... There are very short novels published in large print... Look at Amélie Nothomb! But then again, it's Amélie Nothomb... :)

In conclusion, I think that it's already very difficult to get published for the first time, and that quality does not depend on the number of pages... however, coming in for a first novel with a text that is the length of a short story might seem a bit light...

In a word processing program, you open "tools > statistics" and you can find out the exact number of characters.
