In the following tutorial, take a Live CD of the same architecture (32 or 64 bits) as the operating system you wish to repair. You might encounter errors like: "chroot: cannot run command '/bin/bash': Format error for exec()".
boot your PC with an Ubuntu live CD
unmount the partitions containing your OS (otherwise they won't be detected)
launch a terminal (or console) and enter the following commands:

sudo fdisk -l # to help you find the partition where your ubuntu is sudo mount /dev/sdaX /mnt # mount it by replacing X with the correct partition number sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev # symbolic link of the /dev folder in use to the mounted disk sudo mount --bind /dev/pts /mnt/dev/pts # symbolic link of the /dev/pts folder in use to the mounted disk sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys # symbolic link of the /sys folder in use to the mounted disk sudo mount -t proc /proc /mnt/proc # So Grub2 can find /proc/mounts sudo chroot /mnt /bin/bash # change root to the mounted disk mount -a # mount partitions in chroot apt-get install grub-pc # install Grub2 software (on the disk now at root) update-grub # create a new configuration file: grub.cfg grub-install /dev/sda # install grub on the MBR If the last command gives an error, type: grub-install --force /dev/sda

Unmount the mounted partitions in chroot:

umount -a

(Ignore any reported errors.)

From there, you can exit the mounted disk by pressing ctrl+D. Then, unmount this disk:

sudo umount /mnt/{dev/pts,dev,sys,proc} sudo umount /mnt

Restart and you should now be able to boot correctly.

( If it still doesn't work, ask yourself, have I recently touched my cables, hard drives? , a little check in the computer's SETUP and a Load-Bios-Defaut might solve the problem )

If you have other operating systems on other partitions (like Windows for example), they may not appear in the choice list. To restore this list, simply generate a new configuration file: grub.cfg

Continue loading Ubuntu and then in a terminal:

sudo update-grub

You will then find the complete list of operating systems on the next boot."

Yes (but check the documentation to see if other methods suit you better).
