Hello,
My hard drive was formatted with the FAT32 file system, I wanted to format it to NTFS but during the formatting process, my laptop running Vista shut down. As a result, the file system has become RAW. I have searched through all the forums but found nothing that works. I typed in the command prompt chkdsk J: /F /R where J: is the name of my external hard drive but it indicates that the file system type is Raw. CHKDSK is not available for Raw drives.
My external hard drive is a 1TB Toshiba and there is no data on it.
If anyone has a solution, I am all ears.
Thank you
Configuration: Windows Vista / Internet Explorer 7.0

Okay, thanks, I'm downloading it.
Just a small clarification, I'm not a whiz at computers =) -

To recover files from a hard drive that has changed from NTFS to RAW, you need to use Linux (I used Ubuntu 10.04). I managed to recover all the files from a disk; it's fairly simple, well, if you have a bit of knowledge. First, you need to download the Ubuntu installation from the internet, about 680 MB. Then, you need to put it on a CD as an "image" (so that it boots automatically when you start the computer). Click the option to try without installing; no worries, it won't ruin your computer. Note, you may need to click on "help me boot from the CD." Once Ubuntu is open, connect the disk and another empty disk, drag the folders from one disk to the other, and you're done—the data is saved. Then, to reuse the RAW disk that has become unusable, connect it to Windows, right-click on Computer, select "Manage," "Continue," "Storage," "Disk Management," right-click on the disk in "RAW," then "Format" and "Quick Format." In a few minutes, your disk will reappear in "Computer"; it's ready to be used again in NTFS. Good luck to all, Christopher.

I will share my experience despite my limited computer skills.
Eight months ago, my first Hitachi 1TB hard drive ended up in RAW mode and only showed 32MB under Windows 7 and 33MB in the BIOS (which seems to be the hard drive's cache memory). Since then, I have found no answers and the repair technician is stumped by the problem. Five days ago, I encountered the same issue with a new 1TB drive (which I also use for storage).
In the end, the solution: Never format the drive when Windows prompts you to do so while trying to access its contents.
I simply downloaded Seatools for DOS (not the one for Windows) from Seagate. I created a bootable CD with Seatools (everything is explained and it can be done without significant manipulation).
So I booted with the CD, and Seatools offers various tests at startup. I just went to the advanced options (top menu) and asked to pass the drive with "maximum capacity in native mode"... I immediately retested the drive with Seatools (I hadn't exited it). In the end, I rebooted the PC and miraculously everything went back to normal; my drive is NTFS again with all the folders, etc.
NO data loss!!!
So I brought out the old Hitachi (I find it hard to throw it away), (which had even been formatted), and again, miracle, my drive is back to 1TB NTFS... However, I'm now trying to recover the photos that were on it, but I have less hope because it went through this problem, possibly formatting on my part, maybe by the repair technician too... -
try the great software Easus partition manager for formatting and partitioning

Here, I've finished installing it, but I need a little help; what do I do next?

you have Windows Vista
usb: USB fix from <~Jean-Marc~> = http://doc.jm.pagesperso-orange.fr/b1n/USB_GenericDriverFix.vbs
general = http://doc.jm.pagesperso-orange.fr/usb_erreur.htm
to be downloaded with IE, on the "Desktop,"
unplug all USB devices
double click on it to run (for Vista, right-click on it and "Run as administrator")
and restart the PC
then reconnect your USB devices, finishing with the USB ADSL modem (if you have one)

I will try with "Fat32Formatter," and format it to FAT32
https://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche189948-fat32formatter.html
if you really want it to be NTFS, you will convert the partition with Windows
http://www.infoprat.net/astuces/windows2k_xp/astuces/disquedur_002.php
however, you will be limited to use only on PC

I have a hard time understanding what's going on
you manage to destroy the partition
and 10 seconds later, the disk is no longer recognized to create and format
??????

Yes
the only thing that happens is if you want to copy an HD movie that is over 4 GB onto the external drive, you need to split it using
http://xtremsplit.fr/
for example, you create a movie folder on your PC and a folder on the external drive
you copy xtremsplit into each folder
in one you split
and in the other you paste
