Hello,

I have a single 1TB hard drive in my PC on which Windows 7 is installed. I would like to purchase an SSD, install Windows 7 on it, and then use my current hard drive solely for data storage.
I don't know how to format the hard drive that Windows is currently running on.
Does anyone know how to help me?

Thank you in advance! ;)

Configuration: Windows 7 / Google Chrome

I don't understand your concern...

Just install your SSD in your PC, boot from the Windows installation disk, and install it on your SSD.

Then, reconnect your second disk, move all your docs etc. to your new SSD, while you format the old one, and then put your docs back on it..

Would that work as a solution for you?

In fact, since Windows 7 is initially installed on the Hard Drive, by also installing Windows on the SSD, I fear some kind of "conflicts" between the HDD and the SSD. What I need to do is:
Disconnect my HDD.
Connect the SSD and install Windows 7.
Then reconnect the HDD (when the PC is off, I suppose?) and format it.
I also need to go into the BIOS to set the SSD as "priority" over the HDD, right?
Is that correct?

Thanks for your reply anyway!! ;)

Correct, except "I also need to go into the BIOS to set the SSD as 'priority' over the HDD, right?" ==> No need to do that sort of maneuver ^^ The HDDs automatically know where they are in the chain...

And is there absolutely no risk of conflict between the 2 Windows on the 2 hard drives once I reconnect the 2nd drive (which will still have Windows on it)?
I'm exactly in the same situation. My main drive is 1.5 TB, and I bought a 120 GB SSD to install Windows on. Since it's a pre-built HP desktop with Windows 7 already installed, I requested a Windows reinstallation disk, and they sent me a factory reset kit. So now, I can't install Windows on the SSD because "the disk is smaller than the original"... Grrr! So I paid for their thing for nothing. :-( Any solution, or should I just get Windows online?

No, unless you explicitly ask your computer to do so by setting up a multiboot, otherwise, in general, Windows only installs on the primary partition. You will boot from the "new" Windows, and then you can erase your "old" hard drive.
And so, it's impossible to install Windows on the SSD because "the disk is smaller than the original"... Grrr! So I paid for their thing for nothing. :-( Any solution or should I get a Windows version from the net?

You can't take a version from the internet ^^ However, whatever happens, you are indeed the owner of the Windows installed on your machine - can't they send you anything other than their "HP" disk that is useless? Find the activation key and use it to do a fresh installation - you should be able to download the Windows image from the Microsoft website normally.
