Vmware: configure sound card

Solved

Hello everyone,

I would like to emulate Windows 98 with VMware on XP. The problem is that once Windows 98 and VMtools are installed, I have no sound in VMware.

My sound card is integrated into my motherboard (Nvidia controller). It is not recognized under Windows 98.

What should I do?
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 2.0.0.1

Have you tried with another card emulated by VMWare?
(select another card in your virtual machine configuration).

I had better luck with the ESxxxx cards.

The problem is that VMware emulates a Sound Blaster PCI 128, which requires driver installation under Windows 98, and I apparently have no choice: it's either my NVIDIA controller or the default emulated card.

That said, I'm discovering this software and I'm completely new at it. I'm trying to run an old software "the secrets of intelligence" compatible with Windows 98 and not with XP (even in compatibility mode).

If you can guide me, thank you very much. It's nice of you to help.

I have your solution! Replace your sound card driver with this one and everything will be back to normal :)

Thank you, I had the same issue. Now it works perfectly. All that to read an old CD-ROM!

Got it... I found the original question.

In VMWare, did you remember to add a sound card to your virtual machine?

I'm using VMX Builder, and you need to do: "Add" > "Sound adapter".

Yes, I have two options: to check my sound card (Nvidia integrated controller) and to check the automatic detection of the card. In both cases, under the device manager, the sound card is not detected.

So I am installing sound blaster PCI drivers under Windows 98 in VMware (since that's the card VMware emulates) and there the sound card is properly installed, except the sound is really poor, with crackling noises, and almost inaudible!!

I cannot install Nvidia drivers under Windows 98 because they are not compatible (error message).

Does anyone have good sound with VMware or is that a utopia?

I can no longer listen to music or use the microphone, and I accidentally uninstalled Windows Media.
