Date of photo and video shoot

Hello,
I am following up on this subject because, after finding the solution to retrieve the date and time of the photos, I had marked it as "resolved," but I am now facing the same problem with other photos and videos, and even with XnView, the original dates no longer display. I don't even dare to copy these photos and videos onto CDs because automatically, after displaying them on the screen, the three mentioned dates change to the day I viewed them... I don't know what to do anymore. And the last photo opens with XnView and there is no longer the "Exif" section above. Yesterday I copied photos and videos from my camcorder onto the SD memory card and the copied SD memory card onto the PC. The date of the photos is correct; however, the date of the videos, which were correctly displayed when viewed on the camcorder, no longer appears once transferred to the PC, only the date of the transfer day shows up... I just don't understand anymore. I didn't have this problem with XP. I am on Windows 7... The worst part is that as soon as you rotate a photo to vertical, all the original dates disappear. Why does XnView work on some photos and not on others?
I am also afraid that all the photos I had on my old XP computer and transferred to an external hard drive will have their dates modified when I put them back on my new Windows 7 PC...

    Hello Nicky,

    I wonder (just a simple suggestion!) if there might be some confusion between:

    - the dates of the EXIF data, created when the photo was taken, and contained in the image file (.jpg, etc.)
    - the dates of the image file itself, related to the manipulations it undergoes, but which do not affect its content, and notably not the EXIF capture date.

    Let me elaborate.
    - I take a photo on 10/15/2012 at 08:52:14. This date is recorded in the EXIF data as the capture date.
    - 3 minutes and 17 seconds later, I import this image onto my hard drive. Windows creates a file with creation, modification, last access dates that are identical: 10/15/2012 08:55:31
    - I modify this image: this changes the modification date and the last access date, but not the creation date.
    - two days later, I look at it... the last access date is modified, but not the others.
    All this time, the EXIF capture date remains intact.

    Now, I make a copy of this image, on my hard drive or any other medium: this copy will have as creation, modification, last access dates the date and time of the copy's creation. But the EXIF capture date is still intact.

    Could this relate to your issue?

    There are software programs that do this kind of work perfectly well (Exif Date Changer for example), and it's sometimes quite useful when the photos were taken with a camera whose date was completely off.

      Thank you very much Armojax, what you are explaining seems to be the problem. However, there remains the mystery that sometimes the shooting date is accurate but indicates a different shooting time or a date a few days after the shooting date, even though at that moment I am still on vacation and have absolutely not modified the photo...
      as well as the exif data which sometimes provides multiple pieces of information and sometimes only a "modification date." I think the terms used like created, modified, etc.... create quite a lot of contradiction. Finally, the most important thing is that at least in one place the correct date and time appear.... Sometimes all this data is so close yet different that to be sure it's the right time, I check a group of photos that were taken around the same time and there I see that from one photo to another the minutes indicated next to the hour are different and that’s when I’m certain that the data is really accurate.
      Yet it doesn’t seem to me that I had all these difficulties when I was with my previous phone and on XP.... As I was saying, could the updates influence all these changes.....
      Yesterday, even when making changes to the photos like rotating them and everything, the exif dates remained correct, while I had done this maneuver a few days before and none of the dates corresponded to the shooting date..... that’s what had made me panic. Yet I had spent hours on it.... As I had mentioned, could it also be possible that temporarily the date in exif changes to the modification date and then after a certain time the exact shooting date, which might have been hidden at the time of modification, returns to its original date? I will do some more tests on that.

      Hello... I would like to know how to access existing data that gives us the exact date of capture... I transferred my images from an SD card to my phone and then from the same phone to a new SD card... the date is everywhere the one from the transfer... and I want to have the one from the capture... because the photos did not line up in chronological order. Thank you for your response.
