Hello, I would like to find software to create a friendly pétanque tournament. Indeed, my grandfather plays pétanque and he asked me to find a way to ensure that, in each game, the players meet each other a minimum number of times but at least once.

Here's how the tournament works: There are X players participating in the tournament. By random draw, teams of 2 players are formed. So we have team 1 with Mr. A and Mr. B, team 2 with Mr. C and Mr. D, and so on. Again by random draw, the teams face each other. We then have team 1 against team 6 and so on... Then the first round ends.

WARNING!!! I’m actually talking about matches, because while team 1 is facing team 6, team 2 is facing team 9 and so on, and once the last match is finished, we move on to round 2.

For this round 2, the teams change and this goes on for each new round. So this time team 1 could be made up of Mr. A and Mr. F and team 2 made up of Mr. P and Mr. Z. And again, there is a random draw to determine the matchups of the new teams.

Do you understand the problem? I need software that allows me to form the initial teams and draw the initial matchups while ensuring that for all subsequent rounds, each previous round must be taken into account so that players meet each other as few times as possible, given that the teams change at the end of each round, that is, once all the matches are completed.

Thank you in advance for your attention and your help

Thank you very much.

Hello,
for 2 years you have certainly found the solution, what I can tell you is that I myself created a software that perfectly matches what you are looking for, but it was 30 years ago, on a large computer and written in COBOL or RPG, of course I no longer have this software, however I have kept the results in the form of tables with numbers for 16 to 54 participants in pairs
Once registrations are complete with a number assigned to each player in the order of registration, you just need to take the corresponding table and the games can start, as soon as a game is finished the players go to the graphic give the result and wait for their partner and opponents to be free to start the next game without further delay and so on until the 4th game.
In my club, we played every Friday night (only club members) and today there are several surrounding clubs that use these tables.
NOTE, partners and opponents are never the same on a table, however it happens that you play with a player and later you play against him.
