Hp laptop turns on and immediately shuts down?

Hello,

My HP laptop dv8000, when I turn it on, starts the boot process, I see HP appear on the screen, then I hear a click and it turns off?
I tried putting in the battery and it responds a little more but still turns off and the battery light is on, so it's charging.
Is it the power cord that is faulty or is it the socket inside that receives the power cord that is dead, or something else entirely?

    Short circuit at the level of a peripheral. I would lean towards the hard drive.
