Hello,

My problem is as follows: I accidentally saved the cropping of an image, and this operation has been recorded, so I no longer have the original.

That said, my image manager still displays the original in its thumbnail. Is it therefore possible to recover the original despite the mistake?

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 11.0

hi

in theory, there's no way a system restore modifies created documents

try right-clicking on the photo > restore previous versions just in case your entire system is backed up

... in any case, it is not very wise to work on the original of an image.

Personally, I always work on a copy. No risk of losing the original file...

... that's just my opinion.

While searching a bit, I came across this site http://regex.info/exif.html which allows you to fully view EXIF files.

I was able to retrieve the "original" but compressed version (approximately 700*900px), just a quick "save as" and I have it.

Currently, I'm looking for an EXIF editor that uses the same system so I can recover my messed-up modifications, and not have to go through an online site for this function.

That's where I seek the help of anyone to find a similar program ^^'

  Exif is not a file; it's just the information contained in a photo file regarding its shooting.
  You can see it in quite a few photo software.
  
  I don't quite understand how you were able to recover a modified original with that...
  
  An hexadecimal editor, you mean, rather than Exif sometimes allowing to repair slightly corrupted images that are missing one or two pieces of information and therefore unreadable, modified I don't see how.
  I visited your site; it didn't give me anything more, it just seems to have a web search engine that will be useless for personal files never posted online.

  In that case, I believe it creates a copy of the files before modification, that's why you still have a preview somewhere.

It's a wise precaution repeated every day but........ :-//

To get back to the image, well it's dead, and there's no need to discuss it for hours: hexadecimal editor or not, it's dead end. The only solution to recover it, provided regular backups were made, is to check those backups; otherwise.......... back to Baluze's answers*...
For your information, EXIF is THIS, it tells you everything about the image (Camera, time, date, flash or not, speed etc.) but does not allow for any repairs...

Well, since I was just passing by as a not-so-great helper but having to take care of my own sheep, I need to get back.

  I am a graphic designer and an amateur photographer, I know what EXIF data (or rather metadata) is and I always work from a copy, to err is human, I just rushed it a bit (ah, this youth...).
  
  And I managed to retrieve an image 700*900px which is not bad ^^ it's not the original, but well, better than nothing =)

Germain, yes my image manager is ACDSee, an older version (9) but it works wonderfully.

  Perfect. So know that ACDSee (I also had version 9, I hope it was already like that), when it modifies a photo, it stores the original in a separate but hidden folder! So, go to the control panel, click on folder options, view, and show hidden files. Go to the directory where your photos are, you should see a folder labeled "originals" or something like that. Inside, you should (hopefully) find your original file that you can restore by dragging it to your desktop (for example).

  No, I haven't found any hidden files; I think I saw that somewhere in the options, but it seems to me (it's been a while) that it's disabled.
  
  That said, as mentioned above, the following link http://regex.info/exif.html allows you to display all the EXIF details as well as the "large" image used to create the thumbnails. But thanks for the info ;)

  you didn't manage to recover anything, this site just artificially enlarged your image, which any software can do....

  it does absolutely nothing other than reading exif information just as any software does and absolutely does not allow you to recover an image.....

  at that resolution, it would be quicksnap from your camera to display an image it has never seen, don't you think it's like Merlin the Enchanter?

  Spiderlord, I'm sure you looked wrong. Make sure that hidden files are visible in the control panel and then check the folder where you saved your cropped photo. If you're not very good with the PC, ask someone who can help you.

  Yes, almost any viewer makes copies of photos before modification
  They are often referred to as "originals" and can be found in hidden folders
  
  On Windows 7: Open any folder, go to the top to Organize, then Folder and Search Options, then View, and check "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"
  Click OK
  
  Check again if you can see your photos; if ACDSEE displays the thumbnails, it must have kept the originals too
  
  One can be a talented graphic designer without knowing Windows, no shame in that.

I know this post is quite old, but for the next people, try using the software RECUVA; it worked for me, and I recovered the original photo.
