Remote control issue

Hello,
I have a Sigmatek XS-700CR DVD player that has been working perfectly for almost 2 years. However, yesterday the remote control fell and since then I can't get it to work... At first, I had to "hit" it to make it work, but now nothing at all. Can I replace it with a universal remote? If so, can I use any model?
I know, it's a strange question and I'm not even sure if I'm in the right category.
Thanks to anyone who can help! :)

Thank you very much for your response, which was quick too! But I can't find my player's brand and I don't understand anything, can I use a regular universal remote?
(yes, I know, I'm hopeless...) ^^
