I found a gentler and more effective technique than big slaps to unblock your lens due to sand grains blocking the objective or other E18 errors.
It's the vacuum cleaner technique!! I solved this problem using this method on my IXUS 750 i
Indeed, gentlemen. Just remove the brush from the vacuum cleaner, put a piece of tape on the end of the nozzle "around the edge of the nozzle to avoid harming the camera.
Then, you need to apply the nozzle to the ring that surrounds the camera lens. Next, turn on the vacuum cleaner at maximum power.
The camera will then be completely pressed against the suction mouth.
Then, you need to turn on the camera and just play with the zoom several times. Especially from mode 1 to zoom 3. You need to repeat the operation several times.
Finally, set yourself to mode 3*, fix on a fairly distant outdoor shot and zoom in gradually to the maximum while taking pictures. Then go back to mode 3* and stop the zoom. Focus on an object and hop, photo!
The objective is to force the camera to focus on the sharpness.

Hello, my 3-year-old son played with my Canon IXUS 30 and the lens ended up stuck. Error E18. The SD card can be read, but I can't take photos. I was really annoyed at having to replace my camera, so I went to Carrefour and Darty. They respectively quoted me 45 and 38 euros just for an estimate. Ouch! That quickly put me off! I had almost given up hope of seeing that damn lens retract. I thought I would check with the local Asian shop to see if he had a less expensive solution to offer, when I typed "Canon IXUS 30 error code" into my search engine. And I found THE answer. I figured I had nothing to lose by torturing my Canon. And it WORKED!!! I'm so happy! I didn't even have to leave my house. My little 3-megapixel camera still has some great days ahead. A HUGE thank you for the vacuum technique, Gilles.

Yes, gentlemen. Just remove the brush from the end of the vacuum cleaner, put a piece of tape around the end "on the periphery of the nozzle, to avoid damaging the camera.
Then, you need to apply the nozzle to the ring surrounding the camera lens. Next, turn the vacuum cleaner on at maximum power.
The camera will then be completely pressed against the intake.
Then, you need to turn the camera on and all you have to do is play with the zoom several times. Especially from mode 1 up to zoom 3. You need to repeat the operation several times.
Finally, set yourself to mode 3*, take a distant outdoor shot and zoom progressively to the maximum while taking photos. Then return to 3* and stop the zoom. Focus on an object and there you go, photo!
The goal is to force the camera to focus at the level of sharpness.
There you go, I hope this little tip will help you.
Have a good day everyone and good luck!

Funny, I had the same idea, I was going to share it, and Gilles has already done it!
Thanks anyway. However, I advise taking it step by step with the power, so as not to "pull" too hard and jolt the camera.
I also vacuumed through the battery compartment and card reader at maximum power.
To check if the problem comes from sand, vacuum strongly with your mouth... if you feel sand while chewing... you know what you have to do.

Hello,
Found online:
Solution: I think I have solved the E18 error (stuck focus, image reading and downloading impossible, incompetent customer service) of this damn Canon IXUS 500 that I eventually replaced. I should specify that I could still take pictures, nothing more.
While reading all the forums out there, it was clear that this is a particularly finicky device and prone to shocks even for the most careful, like myself.
So I took the bull by the horns, I hit it on the palm of my hand 1X, 2X... I turned it back on and it started working again like on day one!!!
It got stuck again the next day, I did it again and it worked again!

Hi,
I have a Canon IXUS V something (all the labels are gone, it's too old) since July 2003 and indeed I have the same problem (E18) for a while.
The solution, give it a few taps on the left side, I tried it and it works!!
Crazy!!
I'm very happy with this device that takes beautiful photos, it's sturdy, practical,...
It has fallen multiple times, it has accompanied me on all my travels (so it withstands humidity).
See the first comments in this link.

Hi!
The E18 error indicates that the zoom is stuck... but it doesn't mean anything else... it could be due to a broken part but more often it's just a grain of sand blocking the mechanism...
I'm being quoted €90 by an independent repairer to fix the problem... I'm not sure yet if I will go for it...
The same repairer admitted that the Canon IXUS 40 or 50 are quite sought after even if they're broken... he offered to buy it from me for €30 if I didn't go through with the repair to use it for spare parts...
I'll think about it... especially if we can try to get more for it.

Hello,
So like all of you, I have the E18 problem. I just came back from Tunisia, and my device has brought back some grains of sand! I can see the photos I've taken, but I can't take new ones; the zoom doesn't come out at all, or it does once in a while, but the little cover doesn't open, so I can't take pictures! Following that, I used a product (a spray can) specifically designed to clean devices, so it should be cleaned of all sand grains, but it's still not working... That famous E18 message is still there! I tapped (gently^^) on the left side, which makes the zoom come out, but it still doesn't work. And I don't know if the vacuum cleaner is necessary since I cleaned it with the spray?!
If you have a solution, you would save me because, in reality, this device is my mother's, and she cares about it; it would save me from having to buy a new one...^^
Thanks, everyone!

Hello,
For me, it only took a little slap, as you say, for the screen to crack! (IXUS 30)
It still works, but I no longer have access to any options since the screen is gone.
Anyway, if anyone among you wants to get rid of theirs (broken but with a working screen), I’m interested in trying to tinker with it!
Have a good day.

My Ixus 500 was displaying Memory Card Error since this afternoon, after turning the device off and on hundreds of times, I came across this topic.
Well, I gave the device a few little taps, and miracle! It's taking photos again!
