Hello,
having posted once in the hardware category and not receiving any responses, I am copying my post here.
Hello,
last Tuesday, I had a big problem with my PC and not being able to find the issue myself, I went to a professional to fix it.
the problem was my motherboard that had burned out. He changed it and reinstalled Windows XP SP3.
I went to pick up my PC yesterday. It runs, which is nice, however, I noticed that out of the 6 partitions I had (2 hard drives), I only found 3.
I have 2 hard drives, a Seagate 400G where there were only data and a Samsung SP1654N 160G where my old version of Windows (XP Pro SP2) and some data were.
I still have the 2 partitions on the Seagate, where I had my most important data (which I still have, thank God) and where Windows is now installed... thank you, Mr. Professional!
The problem I have is that on my Samsung hard drive, I can only see one partition of 31G that I was asked to format (to NTFS) since it was not usable. Where did my 3 other partitions go? How can I recover the available disk space (and possibly the data still on the other partitions)?
I've read in other posts that you can use TestDisk to check the state of the partitions.
I tried, but I must admit I am a bit lost.
Here's what I did:
analyzed the Samsung disk where it only recognizes 31G:
first analysis with partition range set to None (the program had set itself directly to this, so I left it as is)
in deeper search, it found quite a few partitions, I think; not recognizing the names except for one!
the problem is that in None range, impossible to take any action.
I then did another analysis with INTEL/PC range, and there it only found a single partition of about 40G, even in deeper search.
I tried in MAC just to see, and it found nothing either, and now I am trying in EFI GTP.
Anyway, I am a bit lost, I would like at least to retrieve the total disk space of my Samsung, because I would prefer to reinstall Windows on it rather than with my data. And if possible to recover some data that I had on the partitions I can no longer see.
(or is my disk dead?)
Current config:
Windows XP PRO SP3
AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core 3800+
Gforce 8800 GTS
ASRock N68C-S UCC motherboard
I hope I have been as clear as possible.
Thank you in advance for your forthcoming responses.
one small detail I've forgotten,
the defective disk is IDE and my other disk is SATA.
by changing the jumper position and the connection on the ribbon, I manage to get my computer to see 149G of the disk via right-click on My Computer, manage, disk management.
however, still impossible to find the partitions with TestDisk and only the 31.5G partition is usable in My Computer.

just in case it helps, here's what I did:
so first use of Easeus. it finds 3 logical partitions and one primary (the primary being the 31.5G that I saw before, I think)
I restore, it tells me something like I need to delete the primary partition to access the logical partitions, so having found no other solution, I proceed and observe that I recovered 3 out of my 4 previous partitions. frustrated not to have recovered everything, I decide to try to go further.
I then launch testdisk, and it finds 4 partitions, so I do a Write on the missing one, it asks to restart which I promptly do.
Upon restarting, I notice that only the partition where I wrote is displayed in My Computer. (I couldn't navigate inside it, however)
I then relaunched Easeus, and it finds all 4 partitions. I restore them once again... this time all 4 partitions are displayed in My Computer but the one that was missing initially is not accessible because it's in RAW format.
I then launched a chkdsk <letter of the RAW partition>: /f and voilà everything came back.
Anyway, I finally succeeded. At least I learned a bit more about how a hard drive works with all that I've read here and there.
