Mail merge: stuck in mergefield

Hello,

I'm getting lost in the mail merge...

1. I create my list in Excel, with each column having a specific name: the names of the different fields. I save this list.
2. I create a Word document, which I save in normal mode.
3. In Word, under the mailings tab, in "Start Mail Merge...", I click on "Select Recipients", "Use an Existing List", then I select my list.
4. In "Write and Insert Fields...", I click on the small arrow to the right of "Insert Merge Field" and select the field I want to insert.
Normally, "field_name" should appear. My problem: the field is displayed directly in code mode, which shows "MERGEFIELD field_name" as if I had right-clicked and then toggled the codes. The preview function shows nothing. I have to right-click on each field, toggle the codes to get "field_name". I can then see a preview. If I close the preview, it automatically goes back to "MERGEFIELD field_name"... And then, I'm back to square one!

Another thing I noticed in Word: the quotation marks. Normally my quotation marks (in a text) should be: `' (like 2 apostrophes, called double English quotes). Since the earlier problem, my quotation marks have become « and »... Is there a link between these issues??? I have indeed reset my quotation marks in the options, but the problem persists.
I probably made a keyboard shortcut without realizing it, but which one???

I tried on another PC, with the same files, and everything is normal there.

Thank you for your help.

Configuration: Windows Vista / Firefox 6.0.1

The shortcut introduced by mistake was alt+f9. Just redo it for everything to return to normal.

Phew!

Hello,
The easiest way is to use the Word Mail Merge Wizard (mail merge index, click on the dropdown menu associated with the Start Mail Merge button, and on the link Step-by-Step Mail Merge Wizard).
On the right, a window will appear allowing you to carry out the different steps.
In step 4, remember to click on the link "update all labels." At the end, you can print the file directly or save it with the option to make corrections or adjustments.
As for the quotation marks, it's not an issue because they serve the same function.
You can also use Word's help with the F1 key and by entering, for example, the search: create labels.

Bye

Thank you for the response, but the assistants and help from Word still seem very confusing to me...

Here the problem was that I had accidentally pressed alt+f9!
