Hello, The explorer.exe process to display my desktop no longer starts by default on boot, so I have to open Task Manager > New Task > explorer.exe at each startup to access my desktop. Can you help me restore this process to default? Configuration: Windows 7 / Safari 534.30

Add the shortcut for "explorer.exe" in the "Startup" folder of the Windows Start menu, under "All Programs".
Everything in this folder runs automatically at startup :P

Hello,

Go to Start, all programs, accessories, right-click on Run, choose Run as administrator and confirm, type: regedit and OK.

Follow this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In the right pane, provide the values that are displayed for Shell and userinit

Shell, the value should be --> Explorer.exe
userinit, the value should be --> C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

Remove --> C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

After that, the userinit value should look like this --> C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

I didn't find Winlogon in this hierarchy, here's what worked for me:

1. Press Windows+R to launch the Run command
2. Then, type "regedit" without the quotes
(You're in the Registry Editor, so be careful what you touch)
3. In the Registry Editor, on the left there is a panel with lots of little folders (keys)
4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ then SOFTWARE\ then Microsoft\ then Windows NT\ then CurrentVersion\ then Winlogon
5. Now, on the right there will be many values etc. etc. You need to find the value "SHELL" and delete it right away.
6. In a "blank" or white area of the same pane (we're on the right) right-click -> New -> String Value
7. As the name, give it "Shell", still without the quotes.
8. Right-click again but this time on the Shell value we just created and click "Modify"
9. In the "Value data" box, type "Explorer.exe" still without the quotes
10. Click OK and close the Registry Editor.
11. Restart your computer and there you go, THE SOLUTION.

This value in userinit seems suspicious?

I suggest you repost in the forum --> virus/security so that a system analysis can be performed to check for infection.

I changed the value of userinit ----> Y:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe
I restarted my computer and everything seems to be working again! My desktop launches at startup like before!

However, I strongly suggest you have your system checked in the forum --> virus/security to confirm if there is any infection and/or remnants of infection.
