My Wii does not recognize my external hard drive.

Hello,
I just hacked my Wii by following a pretty well-made tutorial, I must say. Everything went well and when I plug my external hard drive into my Wii, it doesn't recognize it. So I tried with my friend's external hard drive, and it worked, my console recognizes it and I can play with it. However, I formatted my hard drive to WBFS and transferred the games in .iso format using the WBFS manager..
Can anyone help me? A big thanks in advance!

Configuration: Windows 7 / Safari 534.30

You might need to down/upgrad your Wii...

Not all hard drives are compatible with the Wii.

I confess that I'm not very knowledgeable about this, I ventured into it without any damage (so far). How do I go about doing this?

Well, all you have to do is look this up online... You're lucky your Wii hasn't bricked...

Do you have a link for me?
What exactly does it mean to brick your Wii? And how can you avoid it or fix it if it happens?
I'm sorry for all these questions, but I'm a novice...

Ah yes, another question: is it possible to go from 4.1 to 4.2 while avoiding 4.3? If so, what risks are there? What data/programs will be lost?
