Hello,

I have a problem with my laptop. It shut down while I was working, and since then, when I try to restart it, the following message appears: "A disk read error occurred." I am then prompted to click on Ctrl/Alt/Del to restart, but the same error message shows up every time.
Does anyone have a solution? Thank you in advance!

To resolve the issue of the message "a disk read error occurred," I took the hard drive on which Windows (Windows 7) was installed and connected it externally to my other computer (which also has Windows 7).
After connecting it externally, Windows prompted me to repair it (like when you improperly disconnect a USB drive).
After performing the repair, which took ages, I went to My Computer (Computer), right-clicked on the externally connected hard drive (the one connected internally on another computer should be the same), clicked on "Properties," then on the "Tools" tab, then on the check tool (the "Check now" button), ticked both boxes, and clicked on "Start."
After letting it do its job, when I reconnected the hard drive to my computer, the problem was solved.

Here's a quick summary of the steps:

1 - Connect the Windows hard drive to another computer (externally or internally, it doesn't matter)
2 - Go to My Computer (Computer)
3 - Right-click on the hard drive
4 - Click on Properties
5 - Click on the "TOOLs" tab
6 - Click on "Check Now"
7 - Check both boxes, click on "Start"
8 - Once the check is finished, disconnect the hard drive and reconnect it to the tower.

Hello,

check the boot sequence in the BIOS, see if it’s set to HDD, CDROM, or Floppy. On startup, press the keys “Delete, F2, F5, etc...” to access the BIOS.

If after setting the boot sequence to HDD, the problem persists, you need to check the Recovery function. This function is available on laptops and also on certain brand PCs. It allows for factory system restoration. You just need to know the key combination during boot to access it...

I set the boot sequence to HDD, but the problem persists! As for the other solutions, it's a bit like Chinese to me... A lot of people are telling me that the hard drive must simply be dead (I've had my laptop for 2 years). Anyway, I think I'm going to give up.

It's a bit foolish to give up... Do you know how to boot your PC from a bootable Linux CD (like Knoppix)?
If yes, check if you have access to the disk; if so, it means the hard drive is not dead.

If you have a Windows XP CD, you can try to do a repair...

The trick is to let your machine cool down for a few minutes... I think this error occurs when the hard drive overheats! I've had this problem many times (only under Vista / "Raptor" hard drive) but by letting my PC cool down for 15 minutes or more, this problem goes away and Vista boots normally!

Hello. I have exactly the same message on my computer. Except that this one, ACER Travelmate 5320, is brand new. I’ve been using it for a week. The problem occurred this morning. The computer had been on for 10 minutes, without an internet connection. After closing a program, it froze. So I turned it off directly with the power button, as I often do in such cases. Since then, upon reopening, it displays the indicated message. Of course, I can send it for repair, but that will take time and I specifically bought this new computer because I really need it. I had the problem the first time: the PC (a brand new tower from April) started lagging like crazy and then shut down. After that, I encountered pretty much every error you can see at startup: disk read error, Windows didn't load properly with options for safe mode, etc., there's a missing file to load Windows, and so on... After about twenty attempts, I managed (by miracle, I really thought it was over) to boot from the installation disk to format everything (repair didn't work). The "new" version of Vista ran for a week before crashing again (while playing ArmA with the excellent Frenchpoint mod, but that's a detail). Since then, I've been trying every day to format and reinstall Vista without success: the installation crashes telling me that a file didn't install correctly... My HDD is a MemUp, and as for heat, I have a giant case with a big fan. And even if the problem could come from that, I could at least reinstall Vista the next day, which is not the case. The BIOS is well configured. I think my HDD was defective from the start... Even though it frustrates me, I'm somewhat reassured to see that I'm not the only one with a brand new PC that’s already broken in 2008 ;). If it's really the HDD that's dead, it's still crazy to see that after all these years, manufacturers haven't found a quality process to address this issue (it deserves a hanging by the peanuts).

It’s a hardware problem, the only way I have to solve this issue

PREREQUISITES
1 have an external drive with enough free capacity to back up drive C
2 obtain the bootable CD of Drive Image 7.0 ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL TO HAVE
3 have the CD with the original recovery OS of the PC

PROCEDURE
3 boot with the DRIVE IMAGE 7.0 CD ... choose menu 1
4 in the various menus AT THE BOTTOM LEFT THERE’S THE EQUIVALENT OF START in XP, look for explorer and select the external drive
5 create a directory e.g. SAVEC on the external hard drive
6 from the menu choose TOTAL COMMANDER
7 in the left window select the root of drive C and with CTRL A the system files that appear in red then each directory by clicking on it + pressing SPACE
8 in the right window go to the SAVEC directory
9 in the options at the bottom select COPY and start the copy, be careful to check the box that allows copying attributes and NTFS rights, the options menu allows you to choose the behavior in case of overwriting if you had to interrupt and restart
10 after the copy restart the PC with the original Windows recovery CD
11 delete the partition ESPECIALLY do not use the recovery option of Windows IT DOES NOT WORK
13 reinstall Windows to the end
14 reboot the PC with the internal hard drive IT SHOULD WORK OTHERWISE you have to change the disk or there is a hard drive controller-motherboard problem etc ...
15 reboot the PC with DRIVE IMAGE 7.0
16 choose menu 1A
17 from the menu choose TOTAL COMMANDER
18 in the left window enter the SAVEC directory on the external disk and with CTRL A the system files that appear in red then each directory by clicking on it + pressing SPACE
19 in the right window go to the root of drive C and delete EVERYTHING by selecting each directory and file and doing DEL BE CAREFUL TO BE IN the right window when doing delete
otherwise you risk damaging your backup
20 restore all files with the COPY function ... do not forget the attributes and NTFS rights option
21 once finished ... REBOOT by removing the CD
22 EVERYTHING SHOULD RETURN AS BEFORE...

I'm leaving a message to find out if the external hard drive can be connected via USB, is that sufficient?
As for the cause of this bug, it remains a mystery to me.

(I burned a CD, then I told Windows to install its updates. I shut down the PC instead of rebooting, I don't think that influences anything but let's move on. I didn't specifically wait for it to finish before closing the lid and that's it.)

Where can I find the famous CD of Drive Image 7.0?

It's just a path like any other, but I fixed this error by repairing the boot sector of the disk (it's not necessarily within everyone's reach, but I did it with TestDisk; tutorials are available on Google for those who want to try, in any case you can check your disk before doing anything).
