Wi-Fi adapter for Samsung TV Solved

Question

Hello,

I have just acquired the Samsung UE40C5100 television.
I would like to connect this TV to the local network (Livebox) where I can read multimedia files from the laptop on the TV.

In the user manual, it states that for this, I need to obtain a Samsung wireless LAN adapter (WSI09ABGN, WSI09ABGN2, WSI10ABGN).

My question is, is it strictly necessary to have this Samsung adapter to network my TV and laptop? Or is a USB Wi-Fi dongle that supports the 802.11N protocol sufficient?

Indeed, I have an RJ45 port, but if I ask to connect to the local network via Wi-Fi, it's because I don't have the option to do it via RJ45...

The problem is that the TV only contains the drivers for the cards mentioned in the documentation, so you will have to choose one of these cards.
As a result, like any system with a monopoly, they are not really cheap.

Furthermore, the wifi, based on certain parameters, has a very variable speed, so if by bad luck you get 5.5mbs, you can bet that your DLNA experience will not be "great."

If the cable issue is a problem of distance, your wifi will also be affected; why not consider a powerline solution?

I didn't say impossible but probably not unless we know the chipset of the cards in question and see if they are not found in other Wi-Fi cards, and still it's not guaranteed that it will work.

Otherwise, you can be almost sure that Samsung just integrated the drivers for its cards.
At worst, to watch movies from your computer on your TV, there's always the HDMI cable.

I connected a friend's Orange Wi-Fi USB key (802.11b/g) to my TV.
When I go to the "settings" tab on the TV, I can't choose the Wi-Fi network type; only a wired connection is offered.

Would a universal Wi-Fi key work?

Or I think I must use the Samsung Wi-Fi key as stated in the documentation to enable the "Wi-Fi" network type in the settings menu?

The only solution if you don't want to use the Samsung key is to connect your TV via an Ethernet cable. I took advantage of the proximity of my router to the TV and connected my laptop to my TV. To benefit from the Allshare option, you need to install a software that you will find on the official Samsung website (You need to know your TV model)....

The powerline works very well if your Samsung TV has an RJ45 socket.

For my part, I connected it with a powerline adapter to the TV and similarly to my Freebox, and it works very well.

An alternative solution to the Samsung dongle, for less than €30, is to buy a mini WiFi router that connects to the USB port and has an RJ45 socket.

This device will make your television think that you have a wired network. It is this device that connects itself to your WiFi network. If your television does not have an RJ45 socket, then this solution will not work.

Also, note that the following Samsung model WIS12ABGNX is fully compatible and identical to the WSI09ABGN and it costs less on eBay. About $41.

It seems that the following key for $15:
EW-7718UN if the label says: V1.0A
will work without issues. However, be careful, another revision will not work or you will need to do some manipulation with Linux.

I bought a Samsung LAN adapter WIS12ABGNX today (not WIS09ABGN as indicated in the manual) for my UE40C6710USXZF
and there are no issues connecting to WiFi with my Freebox.
The box states compatibility from 2010 to 2012 for TVs and Blu-ray
compatibility chart

LED TV 2010: C5000 and + 2011: D5000 to D6400 2012: EH5300; ES5500; ES5700
LCD TV 2010: C550 and + 2011: D530 and + 2012: NONE
PDP TV 2010: C550 and + 2011: D550 to D6400 2012: E490; E550

This adapter is much cheaper than the WIS09ABGN and is easily found at general retailers, for me it was D...Y for €49.
