Hello, my problem is that every time I open my computer, my documents open on the desktop. How can I stop my documents from opening on startup? I have Windows XP Home Edition, thank you for your response.

Hi Angie75, try it this way to be sure
Start / run / regedit / OK.
Hkey_local_machine\Software\ Microsoft\Windows NT\Current version\ click on - Winlogon\ then double click on - Userinit in the right panel.
The value data must be C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,
remove everything that’s written (after the comma).
Click OK, close the registry and restart the PC.
In my case, it worked very well, good luck.

Hi
check the registry: Click Start/Run and type REGEDIT.
In the left pane, open: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\currentVersion\Winlogon
In the right pane, check that the string "Userinit" contains only:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe
If not, click on Start/Run and type MSCONFIG. In the Startup tab, check if Explorer is not checked to launch at startup.

Hi and sorry for the delay, I checked the registry at the location you pointed out (userinit) and here's what I found, C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,,SKEYS,userinit.exe then in msconfig under the startup tab there was nothing that resembled the word explorer and what I saw that was most similar was (desktop 2 c:\documents and set... common startup) and just below (desktop 2 c:\documents and set... startup) I unchecked them one at a time and restarted, a window appeared that I checked and clicked ok. then restarted and it didn't change anything, my damn documents came back on startup even after unchecking both of them. is userinit correct?
Hi
In the registry, double-click on Userinit and in "Value data," enter C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, (don’t forget the comma after exe).
On the same page, also check the value named Shell. Double-click on it and in "Value data," enter Explorer.exe
Exit the registry, restart. It should be fine.

Hello,
I have the same problem ... on Vista ... is it the same procedure that needs to be followed?
If so, my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\currentVersion\Winlogon does indeed contain C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe but with a comma after the .exe (.exe,)
What should I do?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
I'm facing the same problem as molobo. When I start my PC, the "My Documents" folder automatically opens.
I have followed the steps above, but nothing works. Is there another way to prevent the My Documents folder from appearing when I start my PC?
Thank you.

I had the same issue at startup and by following the instructions the folder no longer opens.
Finally, some really nice people who provide good tips for troubleshooting.

Yes, that's exactly what I wanted to say. I had the same problem for months, so thank you very much to everyone who provides solutions to those who don't know anything about computers. It's really nice to know that we can find a solution on forums when we have an issue!
Have a good evening and thanks again!

Hello Angie
I was thinking that you should open a new discussion on this topic by mentioning what you have already tried, and someone will surely come to help you because this discussion is quite old, i.e. February and March 2006.
Nothing better than a new discussion to rekindle everyone's interest.
Good luck.

Thank you for your solution because I had the same problem with my documents.
Thank you very much.
I just had the same problem as you (opening 'my documents' at startup)
Could you please tell me the procedure you used? Thank you very much in advance.
A joy, indeed, I struggled but I'm not very "experienced," but your clear explanations helped me get rid of this problem.
Thanks again.
It's really nice to help and share one's knowledge for the benefit of others.
Thank you
