Very effective method as long as you have cells that contain "real" links of the type ='[Another workbook.xls]Sheet name'!$B$47, which is not always the case... And in this situation, what to do?

Thank you for all your contributions to eliminate the stubborn links, and especially to Elwood's solution, which actually works. (I haven't tried the solution involving Open Office, but that should work too)
I think I've figured out after the fact the cause of these links that remain despite the "break links" command:
They are names of cells or ranges that belong to the linked file and that remain; in particular, they are invisible if you search for cells that contain the name of the linked file in their formula, to delete them afterwards.
It's quite easy to remove these names: in the infected sheet, you need to press CTRL F3 to access the list of names, and by scrolling through them one by one, you can see which ones belong to the linked file.

The Ctrl F3 helped me a lot.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I found it, it was a matter of names.

Actually, in Insert / Name / Define, I went through all the names and checked the references, and there I found some names pointing to the workbook B. By deleting all those names (which actually weren't used), I removed the links. It's a good way to handle when a name is the source of links… but you have to think of it!

With link editing, we know the sheet in which the calculation value is located to determine the value based on this link: To remove the link, simply remove from the entered formula the name of the cell from the other workbook and preferably replace it with a cell from the active workbook where we enter the desired value or formula; it will have the value of the old link, the link will no longer be made and will only be internal and controllable.
