Rename network printer

Hello,

I would like to know if it’s possible to rename a network printer (give it a nickname) on my computer without admin rights.

It’s a bit annoying to identify them with their long, ridiculous names...

Thank you and have a good evening.

Configuration: Windows 7
Opera 10.6

And of course, someone is behind the keyboard :D

Hello, I'm arriving very late but if someone is looking for a solution, here's one that I've tried and that works to rename a printer locally:

To do this, you need to modify the registry:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers\<printer name>"

Then on the right, click on the "Name" key > "modify" > and then enter the desired name.

After restarting the computer, the name is changed!

Either you restart, or you open the cmd as an admin (http://forum.cibermonde.com/index.php?showtopic=20985 and type "net stop spooler" then "net start spooler" to restart the Print Spooler. ;)

Thank you, it’s always a bit scary to touch on registers, but it’s effective.
Best regards

Hi,

No, but you can create a shortcut and then you have control over the shortcut

It's not only eagles that reach the peaks, snails do too, but they have to work hard for it!

As for the shortcut, it doesn't solve the problem of the printer list from the print dialog.

No, but it's annoying... they didn't think of it locally, or is it intentional...!!??

Thanks and have a good evening.

EDIT: by locally, I mean the name of the printer on my computer.

Okay, but you don't have to type the name, you just have to choose, where's the problem?

Well, since I have 5 or 6 network printers with ridiculous names that don't indicate if it's color/black and white, duplex or not, or where it's located, I was wondering if it was possible to rename it to something like "color duplex room 3," for example.

Ok, thank you very much.

Although I don't see the problem that I change on my computer the appearance/name of a device ...

Good evening.

give it a try, you've got nothing to lose...

In any case, I tested it at work where I only have network printers and I can't rename them...

Do you change printers often? If not, use the default printer option (you can change that!), it will save you from having to choose every time.
