Rotate and save mp4

Hello,

I made a video on my mobile phone, but it plays horizontally. I would like to save it vertically for publication.
After some research on the site, I tried:
- VirtualDub, which does not support mp4.
- QuickTime, for which you need the pro version that I don't have (and I'm not going to buy it just to edit a few videos)
- Konvertor, which launches but "an error occurs" (!!!) and then closes

I admit that the only solution that seems somewhat workable to me is VLC, where I can rotate my video (almost vertically! and yes, the rotation isn't very precise, but it works perfectly for me). My problem will therefore be this:

After rotating in VLC, how do I save the new video?

I read on a thread that I could use the Convert/Save function, but it doesn't say how to proceed. I tried using it myself, but I can only copy my file in the wrong orientation; the changes I made are not saved.

So that's my problem! If anyone has a solution, I would be very grateful. See you soon!

    Hello,

    The effects of VLC cannot be saved :(

    So you will need to convert or re-encode your video with software like Format Factory, Avidemux or Internet Video Converter for the modification to take effect.

    For Format Factory: First, select the "format" output as AVI, MP4, or others on the left --> add the file --> Destination settings to choose the codec (DivX or XviD or others), etc. --> scroll all the way down to Advanced. There you can flip or rotate your file --> OK --> OK --> Start.
    To change the output folder, you need to go through Options.

    For Avidemux: On the left, select the video codec, audio codec, and Container file (AVI or MP4 for example) --> In Video --> Filters --> Rotate. Double click on it then choose the desired rotation. Preview allows you to see a preview of the result --> Close.
    To save the file, File --> Save --> Save video. Name the file with the extension and store it where you want.

    Be careful, you might need to resize the file; otherwise, the proportions might not look good. But it's not mandatory.

      The important word in my sentence is "almost," meaning that it's not always possible.

      Install several things to "optimize" the functioning of VirtualDub, if necessary, but I don't force anyone:
      - plugins to open different types of files:

      - AvySynth: https://sourceforge.net/projects/avisynth2/
      - have FFDShow codecs and filters on your computer as well.
      The CCCP Pack is often mentioned, I have the Mega K-Lite and for "specialists" nothing beats installing codecs on a case-by-case basis. So everyone does as they wish as long as it works, that's the main thing, right?

      To open an MP4 file with VD: if you have everything, you can try to open the file as is. Sometimes it's enough.
      Otherwise, All types of files --> select the file without opening it --> File type, DirectShow input driver (that's AviSynth basically) --> Now open the file.

      Be careful, it doesn't always work; on my old computer, it worked well, but on my new machine, it's no longer the case (unless I use FFDShow, which allows me to access files in MP4 AVC/H264 and AAC), especially since I reinstalled K-Lite :(

      Honestly, the more I read about DirectShow, the less I understand, but it will come, one day. It's like VD; it took me a long time to use it, and now, I hardly do without it ;)

      Therefore, you can also use Avidemux, which works similarly to VD but is a bit more flexible, or another software such as SUPER, MediaCoder (XviD), or others.
      What I personally do, because I don't create files with a high resolution, is convert to DVD-Video, then after merging the VOB files, I open my file in VD to process it. This does require some space and takes a bit longer, and I'm not in a hurry anyway... ;)

      In conclusion, if you can't manage to use VD directly, but you still want to use this software, particularly for filters, you can first convert your file with another software in order to then open it in VirtualDub.
