How to open a .DAT video file

Question

Hello
I have a digital camcorder. The videos are in .DAT format and I can't open them on my PC. I've tried all possible video software.
Should I convert them, and with which software?

Update windows media player or download VLC

Click on the dat file
It will show you that it cannot open it and suggest searching the internet or choosing a program yourself to open it: choose the second option if windows media player doesn't appear in the list of programs, click browse and go to program files/windows media player/
choose the icon of wmp (*.exe) once done, check always use this program to open this type of file and click ok

To change the playback program for a dat file:
right click on the file and open with / choose the program from the list otherwise browse ... etc and check always use.... and ok
otherwise go to file properties/general tab
click on change choose another program from the list... or browse .... and check use... ok ... ok

If it doesn't work, it means your dat file is not a video file or it is a video file saved in another format but with the current extension changed :( but I don't believe that

But there are software that inform you about the actual stream and compression of the video/audio file, etc.

Good evening,
If it's really a video file (note that a video file is generally not with a .DAT extension and the files are rather large), try to open it with VLC. If you can't do that, try changing the extension to .avi or .mpg and try to play it again with VLC.

To open a dat file, you need to know which software it was created with and then try to open it with that software, or open it with Notepad, which sometimes yields unexpected results.

For me, it worked very well with the latest version of VLC. Once we choose VLC to play it, the computer recognizes it, and I convert the video to AVI format using the Format Factory software.

Right-click on the file, then select "Save As" and replace .dat with .pps; this works 90 times out of 100.

I had .dat videos too, and this software could play them
