cancel default open program Solved

Question

Hello everyone,
please how to cancel the default opening of a file type by an application!
Example: I accidentally set all files with the .xx extension to always open with "Notepad" and I
want to undo this choice (to define which program to use for each file opening, "open with ...")!
How to proceed?

I'm reopening this topic to ask for help for the same reason as the people above but a bit different and definitely more embarrassing :-/

Indeed, it is because of an error on my part that by clicking on a shortcut (*.lnk) I used the "open with" application to set it to Nero Showtime... However, it didn't take into account the program I wanted to use but all the shortcuts, and of course, there's no way to go back -_-'...

So I followed Flapinou's advice above:
"The answer is found in the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, right-click on the .extension to remove as well as in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/explorer/fileexts and right-click again here on the .extension to remove.

Followed by a little reboot to ensure the new registry is taken into account, and voila, no more affiliation.

And at my own risk, being almost sure that there would be another problem, I did it... Poor me... Impossible to open anything, regardless of the program used...
In short, it's a huge mess to find what I want... Internet thankfully can start from anywhere, but of course, no system restore...

Can you please tell me if there is a solution? Or do I have to completely reset the PC?

Hi,

Go to Explorer -> Tools -> Folder options -> File types. There, you delete the file type you no longer want to associate with an application. When you reopen this file, Windows will prompt you with Open with, and you just need to check the "Always open with" box.

It's impossible to find the solution to set a .mp4 file to open with a program without being able to uncheck it and only choose a program.

How do you restore the extension to its original state under Vista?

I found a pretty simple solution for beginners like me. Since I wasn't even able to identify the keys to delete in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, I instead just uninstalled it with a useless program. I then changed the default program and uninstalled it. And there you go!

Hello everyone,

I've been trying for a while to fix my mistake but nothing works, so I'm asking for your help!
Every time I try to open a program like the internet or any software, it keeps asking me to choose a program to open it with, and I have to find the right program myself. The thing is, I'm not a computer whiz, let's just say I manage!
How do you get to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT?
I've already tried clicking on start and then the programs by default in the right panel, but still nothing at all.

Thank you Mygale06, but I also can't download programs, which is very inconvenient. I have to choose "open with" even to download a program, whereas before it was much simpler. I would just click "run" and that was it!

If you have any other solutions, that would be nice.

Download the app anyway, then do this:

Start, open my documents or other folders.
Then, Tools and Folder Options.
At the top, you have View, and you uncheck: Hide extensions for known file types and you confirm by clicking Apply.

Then you can see the extension of your files, and for example, if you downloaded a software, change the file name to .exe and I think that will resolve part of your issue.

I'm in the PACA region, so if you're in the area, why not try to see the machine, which would be easier.

I did exactly what you told me mygale06, nothing is happening and .exe is automatically placed on certain files.
To download Glary Utilities nothing is happening anymore, nothing downloads as software, it just gives me the options to run, save or cancel, but clicking on them leads to the same "open with".

Do you have a MSN address so you can guide me step by step and I can tell you what's happening as I follow the steps, if you don’t mind.

Hello,
The easiest way is to use a script that modifies the registry.
You can find them at the link https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/file-asso-fixes-for-windows-7/
By clicking on the corresponding LNK box, you will download the script. Put it on your desktop, then right-click Merge and restart your PC. Your registry will be reconfigured for the shortcut in question.
I did it and it works very well.

I just made a huge mistake. I downloaded the PowerPoint viewer and accidentally clicked on open with Picasa. All the icons on my desktop have the Picasa logo, and if I want to open, for example, Google, I end up with the Picasa viewer. The same goes for Avast, Firefox, etc.
I'm not an expert, and I don't know how to get my desktop back to open programs normally.

Hello, the best thing, since everything is associated with all your programs, is to restore to an earlier date. In Vista or Seven, this option is available through the control panel if I remember correctly, provided you have opted for automatic backup.

Normally, it's: Start / Control Panel / Backup & Restore something like that. What version of Windows are you using?  And if you uninstall Picasa: Start / Control Panel / Programs & Features And there you uninstall what you have or your programs; that should solve the issue I think because it wouldn't be operational anymore and wouldn't be requested as the default program by all your applications.  It's not easy when we don't have the PC in front of us; I'm in the Nice area, you never know.  After that, I don't really see too much; I'm giving simple solutions now, but it’s more complex to do or achieve. But what is certain is that you have associated all your programs with just one.  The best thing, if you have a computer shop nearby, is to show them; it won't take more than 10/15 minutes to restore it to its state, and if they have good customer service, it shouldn't cost you anything. For your information, make a copy/paste of your photo folder, etc. But normally your photos are not deleted; it's better to make a copy or even burn them onto a disc or store them on a free hosting server or something like that.  It's not easy to resolve such an issue remotely without seeing the machine.

Hello, I propose another challenge. I recently installed Embarcadero RAD 2010, and there was a tool similar to InstallShield (I say similar because I can't remember the name of the other application). I wanted to try the application by creating an installer for one of my apps, but I messed up like an idiot. I pointed to the "exe" files and now all my executables launch my application. Of course, restoring is not feasible, although I tried to do it from the command prompt without success. The files point to the right address, except that it says "exe document" in the type. I can't uninstall my application because it is simply not installed. Also, for the registry it's impossible—still "exe"! To sum up, we have no access to any "exe." The only upside to this mishap is that it makes a good example for a batch file. In any case, thanks in advance, and hats off to whoever finds the trick.

So I'll explain quickly, Start > Default Programs > you choose Set your Programs by default and you select the program ;) The names are translated by myself since I have Windows 7 US xd (The default program needs to be selected. (e.g., I changed explorer.exe to winrar so I select explorer.exe!) and you make the first selection ;)

launch "Regedit" and in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk", delete the "UserChoice" folder and then restart the session.

To launch regedit, you will need to first type "cmd" in the start menu area (under Vista and Seven).

Hello,

If you are not an Administrator of the machine, then your modification is only taken into account for your account.

Solution:
regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Go to \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts
Select the concerned extension,
Expand its tree
Delete the UserChoice and OpenWithProgids directories (if needed)

There you go!
