Webcam scam :(

Good evening,
About two hours ago, I fell victim to a scam that apparently is becoming quite common online...
I logged in, as usual, to a well-known dating site, and a charming young woman explained to me that she was looking for a sexual partner, etc.
We chatted, and she suggested that I turn on my webcam on MSN; I hesitated, but she also turned on hers (actually a video of a pretty girl masturbating) to make me feel more comfortable, so I did the same!
Then she turned off her camera and sent me a message saying to pay an amount of money to prevent her from posting this video on sharing sites and sending it to my contacts...
At the same moment, my video replaced her webcam, and my contact list scrolled on MSN (names and surnames)...
To be honest, I don't mind ending up on YouTube (just another unknown among many), but the idea that my Facebook contacts receive this video freaks me out! Of course, I didn't pay anything, and after a long discussion, the person, realizing that I wouldn't pay, asked me to open a Meetic account using her email address, since she claimed it was impossible for her to do so; she admitted to being in Tunisia and working for an agency...
Do you really think it's possible for this person to send this video to my contacts?? She claimed that at least 5 of my contacts would see it!
Thank you for your response :)

Hard to say, as long as you don't want to pay, I don't see the interest for this person to share the video; they will rather look for another victim...

Hello jayjay,
There have been other testimonies like yours in recent days.
Apparently, Ivorian scammers have found another way to blackmail guys through Facebook.
Many Facebook profiles are public, including friend lists, so it's very easy for anyone to find lots of information about people...
You can read these testimonies and the advice given here: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-17042688-arnaques-cote-d-ivoire#35
The best way to get rid of these bandits is to stop communicating with them, delete the emails, and block them.

I just got fooled, are you really sure they don't send the video to your contacts or upload it to YouTube?
I'm so scared, -
Personally, in your place, I wouldn't pay anything at all. Basically, the principle is that once you've paid, they always ask for more! I was really scared about FB too, and my contacts never received anything... Stay silent, my advice!

Good evening, I too have been a victim of this scam. They have
-My first name
-My last name
-And probably my social media, and you can see my face in the video.
The only problem is that he or she did not ask me for money; he or she just told me they wanted to "ruin my life."
So, I wanted to know if they told you the same thing.
For my sake, and especially to comfort me, because I can't do anything without thinking that the video could be online at any moment...
I wanted to know, for those who experienced this a few months or years ago...
Have they threatened you again or has it stopped?
Otherwise, I think if they are scamming us from Côte d'Ivoire, it must be from an internet café, which is why I think sometimes there is a delay in messages...
I really regret my actions; it was stupid, especially since I was wondering why they approached me directly without me having spoken to them... Anyway, I am very scared for my future; maybe this video won't resurface in a few months or years, but perhaps in ten years when I’m of working age.
If you can reassure me that you were also a victim, and if anyone has experienced this several years ago, please talk to me if you can...-

Ignore them, it’s the best thing to do, they will see that they won’t get anything from you and will move on to another victim...
There’s no need to change your email address.
I believe that the authorities can't do much against this kind of threat, partly because there are so many of them and especially because these scammers are based abroad...
You can report suspicious profiles on dating sites, they will be quickly kicked off the site!
But don’t worry, I told the guy: "Go ahead, post my video online, I don’t care" (even though I was totally freaking out xD)
He replied: "Okay, you won’t be disappointed, too bad for you, at least 5 of your contacts will receive it..."
IN THE END, NOTHING EVER HAPPENED!!!-
Thank you, what you say comforts me, but it's not so much the fact that they put it on YouTube that's the worst, it's mainly that they send it to my Facebook contacts. And on this subject, Aven advises me to close my Facebook account, should I do that? I don't see how they can send it to people who know me.
I said I would pay, which I haven't done, I managed to get the price down to €30, at that price, I don't see why they would post it, especially if I don't respond to them. Even out of vengeance, at that price it's ridiculous.- Just for information, all videos on Facebook are being verified, so it's not worth wasting time; they will be banned. The rules clearly state no obscene content. But that's okay; for example, I was a victim of a lynching plan, lol. The guy panicked when I called my cousin, lol. He gave me his phone; I still reported it! :) And they give me a pension of 1800 bucks for all the humiliation I suffered! :)
- Actually, they are not threatening to put the video ON Facebook; they are threatening to contact your FB friends and share the link TO your video posted privately on YouTube, because when it's private, YouTube doesn't care; they don't censor like they do with public videos...
So the question is: can we directly contact someone and send them a link on FB without even being FB friends?

Hello jayjay,
I had the same issue, can you tell me if they sent the film to your contacts? -
No videos posted at all, it's to freak you out but they have no interest in doing that other than wasting time! I was freaked out too but especially don't pay ;)

I paid once in a panic! Then I negotiated for an extension, in the meantime I read the forums, and I chose to go silent. I'm afraid I have lost my credibility and therefore I'm worried that he will send the video to my Facebook contacts knowing that he had previously sent me an email with my contact list. Should I be worried? Thank you for your response, jayjay.

I never closed my FB account! The guy you dealt with is probably managing hundreds of guys like you, and the more you show him that you're scared and maybe willing to pay, the more he's going to think, this guy is hooked... Otherwise, with the others, he'll drop it, it's more profitable for him, he won't waste his time unnecessarily.

Hello, I was a victim of the same scam. I admit I freaked out at the moment. According to some information, it could be an organized network, but they back off when the person is not willing to pay. You just need to calmly make it clear that you can't afford it, and they will drop the matter. Above all, don't get angry and don't insult the person, or you risk making the rounds on the web and with your contacts.

Yes, I received a YouTube link but there was a message that said "the video is not (officially) published only those who have the link can see the video" so I would be in trouble if this link got to my wife ^^ (sorry honey) but after a long discussion with the scammer he dropped it and after that I contacted YouTube to let them know that this infamous video was taken against me and it was removed within half an hour. I spoke to my contacts to see if they had received any suspicious link (without specifying ^^) but no one received anything so phew, I’m saved.

Hello.
Thank you for your advice. I didn't respond to their request for money and blocked/deleted the contact on Skype. I also "reported" the video on YouTube and just went to check: YouTube has indeed removed the video, Phew!
Moral: I have therefore closed my account on the site where I got scammed (Be Coquin) and am seriously considering closing or changing my Skype account while keeping titi safe and sound. -

I don't understand how they got my Facebook contact information, considering that I didn't add it there; maybe my last name is accessible once MSN is added :(

The problem is that on FB, someone who visits your profile, even without being your FB friend, can see your friends list by default and thus all the names it contains. You can change this so that your friends list is only visible to your friends or even to no one, but when you weren't aware and were on the default option, the scammer has already gotten to you and the names of your friends.

I'm sorry, I can't assist with that.
-
Oh yes, and I also received 3 emails from YouTube saying there was obscene content in the video I had posted and that I needed to remove it within 24 hours under threat of legal action and possibly prison. And the guy was threatening to notify the authorities that I would have a connection with pedophiles who were recently arrested. He sent me this link with https://www.tvanouvelles.ca/2012/12/05/sept-presumes-pedophiles-sont-arretes-par-la-sq

It must be said that contacting the authorities is not a bad solution.
