Overlay a transparent image in Paint

Question

Hello,

With my brand new microphone, in Paint, I can't find the icon to overlay one image on another. If I paste, I erase the previous image with the new one: for example, I want to put a nice hat on a bare-headed character. How can I do that?
Please let me know if there is a manual for Paint; I can't find the Help section.

It's normal, Microsoft Paint is made like that. If you want to be able to do it (cut images according to their contours, overlay semi-transparent images), you have the choice between Adobe Photoshop (expensive) or GIMP, open-source (free) and honestly great.

I assume your operating system is Windows (since you have Paint).
So scroll down the page to the 'GIMP for Windows' section and click on the 'Download GIMP 2.6.10' link.
The site is in English, but the program will install in French (or it will ask for the language and French will be in the list).

To create semi-transparency, if you haven't done so already, go to the menu
Layers -> Transparency -> Add Alpha Channel
Then select the area where you want to apply transparency.
Take the Eraser tool and adjust the opacity of the eraser to your liking (in the left panel).
Then apply the eraser to the area of the image in question: click on the area with the left mouse button, move the mouse while holding the button down and release the button when you have applied the eraser over the entire area. If you erase with multiple clicks, you should not go over the same spot twice; otherwise, the semi-transparency will not be uniform.

Hello,

With the Paint from Windows 7, it is possible to create a transparency.
However, the image that is to be in front must already have a transparency by design (e.g. .png files).

To do this, I open my background image and my foreground image separately in two Paint windows (by right-clicking - open with).
Then, I make a selection on the foreground image, which I cut or copy.
I go back to my background image, and I paste it, then, without deselecting, I click on the selection button and then on "transparent selection".

I thus obtain a transparency, quite basic, indeed.
The edges of my foreground tend to turn white, but this allows you to see the background image through the selection, which I can then deselect.
