CCleaner: clean free space

Hello, I've been using CCleaner for a short time and I've noticed an option: clean the free space.
What is its purpose?
Why is this option unchecked?

When a file is deleted, what it contained is not removed from the disk. There are ways to recover deleted files.

Wiping free space prevents this recovery.

Hello, sorry to revive an old topic, but I've read on many forums about questions regarding the topic "cleaning disk space," and several often conflicting opinions are given; does this operation help improve PC performance?

  No, no performance improvement.
  
  Clearing the temporary files folder can slightly improve things if it is really overloaded.

I am cleaning up the free space on my hard drive, and the free space is decreasing significantly (over 200 GB in a short time); is that normal?

  Hello,
  
  CCleaner fills your hard drive with a huge file (to take up all the space) and then deletes it really efficiently. So your free space will drop to 0 but don’t panic!
