Avoid lag while streaming

Hello everyone,

As a quick preface, I’m not here to spark a debate about the illegal content of certain streaming services. I won't be praising this workaround or asking for addresses. What interests me is the purely technical aspect of the topic.

My problem is that I experience a lot of lag when watching streaming videos. However, when I ask other people watching the same program (broadcast live), they receive the video quite smoothly. Of course, this problem may depend on the broadcaster, but my issue is really generalized. So there’s definitely a problem on my end.

I was wondering if there are ways to improve my setup in order to facilitate the reception of the stream. Are there ports to open or other adjustments...?

When I watch streaming videos, I turn off MSN and limit my internet activity to just the video page. I use Flash Player 10 and have the bare minimum running in the background on my computer.
Here’s my setup:
- Windows XP SP2
- 2 GB of RAM and C2D 3 GHz processor
- Firefox (latest version) and Internet Explorer (?)
- Antivirus: Antivir
- Computer regularly cleaned with CCleaner
Um... for the rest, ask and I’ll let you know as soon as possible.

Thank you.

The problem can either come from:
server side
- even if your friends don't have this problem, did they connect exactly at the same time?

client side
- entry blocked by the firewall
- internet connection slowed down by various viruses or other programs consuming bandwidth.
- faulty network card
- Wifi connection, or long and faulty ethernet cable
- overload of protocols installed on the Wifi card
- presence of a proxy on the router
- the antivirus can also be responsible

between the client and the server
- geographical conditions may cause you to take different routes. Maybe you depend on a network that goes through a proxy.

Server side:
- They connect at the same time since these are programs broadcast live.

Client side:
- I don't use a firewall.
- As for viruses, I track them and have antivirus software, but really... How can you truly get rid of them other than wiping everything, deleting backups, completely blocking your computer with an aggressive firewall, and forbidding friends' USB drives... That's the approach I suspect the most. Hence my search for a software that allows me to see what happens over time with my flow.
- No wifi and a 50 cm cable.
- The antivirus doesn't change anything, I've already tried turning it off.

Between client and server:
I live in a big city and use Numericable, so it should be well "supplied" anyway...

Thank you for your help. ;)
