I would say that this smiley =] is a smiley with big eyes and a smile, so it's happy and *-* rather than someone surprised or thinking. That's how I see it.

Yeah, you can see it that way, but it depends on the context of the sentence in which it's placed that we interpret it ;)

For the first one, turn your head to the left; for the second, open your eyes wide ;)

solution: 1st: smile; 2nd: exasperation (or strange smile like ^^).

    Agreed with jesserugby.
One caveat, these are not smileys but emoticons... it's slightly different as smileys are images while emoticons are characters.

Do you think that this smiley =] can mean that he is both shy and happy, and this one *-* that he is amazed with stars in his eyes?

The first one evokes a silly, somewhat stupid smile.
For the second, someone dazzled... or unconscious, maybe even dead...

... stars or "x"s, it's all the same... I'm exaggerating a bit. A drunk guy or a dazed one then (see the "*" as whirlwinds)

That's why I lean towards being dizzy like the cartoon characters who have swirling eyes when they get hit on the head...
